Capless Fuel Tank

The system, which came from Ford's NASCAR racing experience, first appeared on the 2003 Ford GT sports car. It has two small spring-loaded tabs that pull back a flap inside the fuel filler neck as the nozzle hits them. When the nozzle is pulled out, the flap closes.

Well its certainly a cool idea. I know it works for nascar and you wouldnt have to worry about losing your gas cap any more. Not that i ever have but my sisters notorious for it. Now you just have to remember to shut the fuel door and their wont be any issues of gas spillage.

they need to start putting locks on them like foreign automakers do

you can get locking gas caps at any local auto parts store. in less you mean locking the gas door. I think that would be much easier to break into that a locking gas cap.

:icon_confused: wonder if i can adapt one of these to my truck... it would probably be too expensive to buy right now though.

yeah I know, but with this design, there is no cap. I guess anyone wanting to put something in your gas tank could always just cut into the filler neck, but its still nice to have a lock on it anyways, makes it that much harder. especially with rising gas prices.

Ehhh Im not to impressed, its really not that hard to put a gas cap on.

But I geuss its for the same ppl that need a tire pressor monitoring system......

those locking gas caps from the autoparts stores are JUNK. If you want to remove it, all you got to do is grip it hard enough to flex it a bit so that it cant ratchet, and off it comes. I have removed one from my car like th is when the lock on it went bad, and another on a coworkers car who lost her key.

well in that case I will start jacking gas from my roommate who has one on her ranger :)

jk I wouldnt do that. But that is good to know. i think the idea of a capless tank is pretty stupid, however I did see a guy driving down the street this weekend with his cap hanging on the side of his truck...

The auto parts store near me sells those gas caps the replace your stock cap and have the spring loaded flap for the nozzle. I thought about buying one but never did.

And if you live on a gravel road and drive home with the door open you now have dirt all over the inside of the fuel port for you to push into the tank the next time you refuel. Same goes for if that little gasket around the door dries out and shrinks a little bit and doesn't seal right.

I don't see what is wrong with the cap myself, aside from people not being capible of using it properly which is really a pretty basic concept.

yeah, well theres ALOT of idiots out there. Ive seen them before with the lid hanging off. It all started when people got to lazy or stupid to drive a manual, so they made automatics, now its progressed to this. Pretty soon the car is going to have to drive and fill itself up. Wont catch me in one though.
