I need some advice and tips.

Well i borrowed an impact driver when I was at the farm last and removed the nice rear bumper from my parts truck. When I got back to the city, I went down to cajun tire and finally bought their big impact driver myself, and then headed to princess auto and got the biggest socket set they had for it. By the way, I've been saving up about ten bucks a time each payday to finally do this. Today I braved the weather and went out to change the bumper and.... nothing happened!!! Other than I made a lot of noise. The driver failed to crack loose a single bolt. I soaked it with wd-40, even tried heating up the nut with a torch first. Is the problem my impact gun? Its rated for 250 foot pounds of torque, I thought that would be enough. Is there any other tips or tricks you guys can think of that I can try to get those bolts off?

First off...Yay for Saskatoon!!! Second off...try some pb blaster...spray it lots, let it soak...rattle it with the impact, spray it again. Let it soak...etc etc. You can never use enough penetrating oil. I hear that a 50/50 mix of atf and acetone is the best penetrating oil out there. What year is your parts truck? Sometimes things are just rusted beyond repair

its probably the impact gun. is it electric or air? if its air how big are your air lines? and how much pressure are you running

250 is nothing, you can make more torque than that with a tire iron. Mine is rated at 600f/lbs and still has trouble every so often. Get a good size cheater bar and throw your weight on it.

More heat.
Get it red-hot, and it'll twist off.

its the impact gun. go on canadiantire.ca and look at the reviews for the gun you bought. i was looking at there airguns but saw the poor reviews saying it couldnt loosen anything so i didnt get it.

No its not air, its an electric impact. I checked the reviews for it first, and they were all good, well over 4 stars out of 5. I think i'll keep it, i did get it on sale after all... And I'll start looking for a good used compressor for sale or at an auction and get an air one. One can never have too many tools!! :yahoo: I'll keep soaking it and working at it for a while then and hopefully it'll crack loose. My truck and parts truck are both 86, but the ironic part is that the bumper came off the parts truck super easy. Its my dd truck thats the rustbucket

r1hatman, just followed that link and that stuff looks promising! Any ideas on where I can pick some up?

I got a can at autozone

slap a socket and breaker bar on it and go to town. if it still fights you, use a cheater bar. you can apply a lot more torque with a wrench than that impact will ever deliver.

I had kinda the same issue with mine. I was using an impact to get flywheel bolts off. If I push too hard on the impact gun it didn't do shit to break them free. When I back off and barely held the socket on the nut, it hammered away and zipped them off. It didn't really make a hell of a lot of sense to me, but it was the exact same for every bolt, so......:dunno:
