ok i have an 88 ranger 2.9. it is running about 190 degrees and was wondering if it is running to hot and if i should change my thermostat. if so which should i use?:icon_confused:

190* and running hot? 190 is a great temp.

Just to give you some reference points, without the EGR system, it's possible for the combustion temps to exceed 2500*F.

The cats light off at around 400*, and the O2s don't really start working properly until the get up to 400*.

where are you measuring and with what? engine temperature should fluctuate between 190 and 210 degrees.

the reason why i think its running to hot is because when it gets to 190 degrees my oil is geting to thin and my lifters tick realy loud and my oil preasure drops to zero

Switch to a 15w-40 diesel oil like Rotella or Chevron. It is perfectly okay to use diesel motor oil in a gas engine unless it is real cold outside. Diesel oil also has more zinc in it, which older engines like better anyway, especially the 2.9 with solid lifters. Although the 2.8 and 2.9 tick all the time, it's normal.

Mine runs at 190*F with the new thremostat. Even on the hottest of days.
