well describe just stopped working? do you not feel it engage anymore or not. I know mine just stopped working but that was due to someone packing the hubs full of grease.... But the electronic t-cases are notorious to needing teh shift motor worked on...i've also heard the trick of sometimes just tapping it with a rubber mallet can get it to engage again and well i just pulled off my shift motor and cleaned it when i needed... but more info on ur ex and the problem would help anyone helping u have a better idea of where u should start

well i think what the problem is he shift motor because i can not hear it shift, now i have replaced both rotors and wheel berrings and i might have used just a little tomuch high impact grease in there so i will try that too. thats for the ideas.

i'm about 99.9% sure it's the shift motor. 2 out of my 3 Explorers have had bad ones. They're not that hard to rebuild, but extremely expensive to take to a shop and have replaced. somewhere over on explorerforum, there's a good thread on how to rebuilt them. If you want a super easy temporary way to get 4wd if you MUST have it, take off the shift motor and the little gear wheel that it turns on the t-case (it's held on by those bolts with star shaped heads) and use vice grips to turn the shaft. You'll hear a clunk noise when it engages. IIRC, turn clockwise and the first clunk is 4hi, second is 4lo. of course, this isn't a good thing to do when you're up to your hubs in mud, but it's an option if you truly NEED 4wd.

well i have access to a shop with a lift and an ase mechinc with all the tools i need, so i think im just going to change the motor wiht a new one, at about $100 bucks cause the two salvage motors were no good, even after i rebuilt them

unless you really need it, shop around for a manual t-case, if you have access to a shop it wont be hard to put in.

fortunately, the tailhousing of all A4LD's have the mounting points for the shifters, whether they were manual shift or not, so it's just a matter of cutting a hole in the floor and putting the shifter and linkage in.

but the question to that is do i have to change my auto hubs, cause i hard headed will not put it in 4x4 unless i really need it, and then im lazy and dont wanna get out cause its normaly not the nice beautiful weather or knee deep mud when i need it

no, the auto hubs can stay if you really want them to. I personally would just put in manual locking hubs and keep them locked if you think you might need 4wd that day. I've gone through 3 sets of auto lockers. The only reason I keep putting them in is because my buddy had a bunch of them laying around his shop so they were free.

currently have the same problem with one of my explorers, i have a motor to put in, it is currently on another tcase buried in the snow how do i go about changing it?? never done this before so just a quick run through would be nice..

ok, am halfway through my replacement of the 4wd actuater, unbolted it from donor t/case and encountered a problem, where the yoke for the driveshaft comes out there is 2 wires off to the side of it that go to the actuater, one was a large plug that slipped right out, the other is a single wire that goes directly into the tcase, does this just pull right out? is it ok to cut the wire and splice it to the wire on the explorer that im fixing?? what is this wire for anyways??

the one that is stuck is a ground wire and should be green, just cut and splice, remimber weather proof it!!!!!!!!! and not with duct tape

Would soider it before weather proffing it so that it don't come apart and end up have to redo the work that you just done.
