Ford Ranger & campers


why a slide-in??? when you said pop-up camper i thought you were thinking something like this- http://lifestyle.resourcesforattorneys.com/camping/images/pop-up-camper.jpg


the guy in the picture is jacking up the sides, hence the "pop-up" term, when you are hauling it around it collapses down and is about even with the tailgate, i personally would not use a slide in, if it was just me i would get a teardrop camper or a pop-up if it was me and a few others....
 
the truck will feel more "tippy" on corners, particularly on highway on-ramps
and as JBB mentions will add wind drag, but the thing that'll really nail your butt into the ground is if you ever have to drive in severe weather and experience crosswinds...

1000lb isn't all that bad in the bed of a Ranger, though the weight you add to that , food clothes drinking water, sports equipment etc.... all add to it.

I would STRONGLY recommend LT tires, Load range C as a minimum, with load range D tires being preferable, to handle the load better.
I'd also recommend some other method of carrying the spare than the stock under the truck carrier (where the spare is already a ROYAL-PITA to extract)

I'd also strongly recommend a MATCHING spare tire.


Carrying a camper several hundred miles is WAY different than hauling a load of topsoil or firewood home a couple times a year.

Frankly I'd recommend a small tow behind camper, because then you have the bed of your truck to carry your spare, tools, etc...

I pull a Coleman pop-up behind my Ranger. Sleeps six, and I don't even know it's back there when I'm pulling it. Plus once it's set up we can drive around wherever we want to go without lugging it around with us. Also leaves the truck bed for hauling stuff.

And there's no mounting/dismounting -- just hook up and go.
