So last night me and the wife met up at a friends house and after leaving and about to take off, the wifes jeep was cranking over but wasnt starting. so i got out of my rig went over to her and tried telling her to turn it off and then crank it to the on position just to were the lights turn on and then let it sit there for a second or two and then crank it...(NOTHING!):annoyed:

:icon_idea: So im not sure if it works the same for the newer vehicles or not so i had her do it again, but with a little change. I had her keep it in the on/aux position and pump the gas a few times. then crank it over...(nothing again) :annoyed:

So i went back to my car, got a flashlight. Had her pop the hood and i looked around to see if anything had come loose...NOTHING AGAIN. :annoyed:

So if the wife cant do it the man can right? :icon_cheers:...so i got in the jeep. and repeated the second step...got in, turned the key to on/aux, pumped the gas a few times, kept the foot on the gas, and let that baby crank for a little bit...(at first nothing was happening and then all of a sudden she came alive with a screaming roar of the enigine and then back to idle.)

Jeep was acting as if nothing had bothered it ever....

Its a 2004 Jeep grand cherokee. 100K miles. battery is good(100%), altenator i believe is good!

IT HAS DONE THIS KIND OF IN THE PAST...REALLY ROUGH STARTS WHERE ILL KILL THE ENGINE, WAIT A SEC AND THEN START IT AGAIN AND ITS FINE, BUT NEVER SO BAD THAT I CANT START IT ALL TOGETHER.

ANY IDEAS GUYS? I GOTTA GET THIS FIXED ITS THE WIFES VEHICLE AND WELL...ITS GOTTA BE RELIABLE! AND ITS NOT. :icon_confused:

First off, it's a Jeep... Nah, but really, probably something in the ignition. My guess is the module. My 88 was doing the same thing, rough starts, and sometimes it'd just die at random driving down the road. It's a possibility that's what it is, anyway. I'm not expert, just lending a hand (or trying to :icon_thumby: )

Thanks Man...no I Have Never Had Surging Issues Or Any Other Issues Before While Driving...just When Trying To Start.

Have you had the codes pulled?

My XJ would do that. Turned out to be a fuel pump problem. It would only do it on startup, I'd have to start it twice, no matter if I primed it, pumped it, or anything else, I'd always have to restart, then it would be fine. When I replaced the fuel pump, it would start right up.

huh? fuel pump huh...thats what i was ki9nd of afraid of....how hard is it to replace the fuel pump?

I was thinking it might be the fuel filter...MAYBE?

Well looks like i better start looking into how to change out the fuel pump.

If it is that new though, it quite obviously has an electric fuel pump. And in my experience, they either work, or they don't. Just my $0.02

I used to think that too, my XJ was a 97, electronic pump. I've seen them work in several cases, but provide fluxuating pressure levels. FWIW

damn a freaking fuel pump is like 175 bucks plus install...and i havent ever messed with fuel stuff before....

IS IT ANYTHING A MECHANICALLY INCLINED PERSON COULD DO IN A GRAVEL PARKING LOT?

Well, the hardest part is dropping the tank. I've used ratchet straps to lower a half full tank before. Then it's basically just removing fuel lines (get a fuel line disconnect tool, you can find more about it in the "Tech Library") and removing the pump from the tank. You'll need a brass chisel usually to remove the outer ring that secures it. When you pull it out, make sure you're careful you don't damage the sending unit!

your truck was dieing because the crank position sensor got to hot or the ballast resistor got hot and as soon as it cools it start right up!!!!

You're forgetting that he started the vehicle cold.

I was talking to you about the 88 jeep and as for his truck just remember you fuel ,air and spark.. With out having all of these things your motor won't start and now you have to figure out which one your missing...

yah i realize this....thats why i went directly to fuel. I use to be a certified helicoptor mechanic so i am deffinently wrench savy...

I just have never messed with fuel shit before...well i might leave it for an actual mechanic to handle but we'll see. I gotta find a covered place first to work on it under and then maybe ill tackle it...also the price to fix it...lol if that is the problem.
