Cash for Clunkers sucks!!!

So I'm at the junkyard yesterday. They have a sign outside that the C.A.R.S. are here. This is referencing the vehicles traded in on the cash for clunkers program. I was excited to see a bunch of Explorers and Rangers that were not there the last time I was there. Walking around I see all the engines with bright pink paint on them. They all have tags that say they were part of the C4C program and the oil has been drained out and the engine filled with some kind of glass beads and run until it seized!!!

Leave it to the gov't to ruin perfectly good motors!!!! Oh the stupidity!!!

who cares if the motors are siezed, that just means when yours goes youll have to rebuild it which i dont think is a bad thing. youll have a motor with zero miles on it and the best part is you will know the motors history as it will be a fresh start. i was a little dissapointed though, with all the RBVs that are in the one closest to me (35-40 atleast) none of them had a factory fog light switch!

Yeah sorry, I did not pay much attention to the C4C thing since I wasn't buying a new car. I've been keeping an eye out for a 4.0 and after yesterday I just needed to vent. By no means did I mean to upset anyone.
On a lighter note, I did find several Explorere overhead consoles. Sorry, no factory fog light switches.

wrong its liquid glass and it melts at 1900 deg so the block would start to melt right as the glass would making them worthless.

Downey, Why are you being a butt hole to him? Three people told him it was a repeat subject and he apologized.

The additive they use to disable an engine is a sodium silicate solution. Its basically a mixture of sodium silicate (go figure) and water. As the engine gets hot, the water vaporizes and dehydrates the solution leaving just the sodium silicate (which is now a solid that resembles glass). As you know, H20 turns from a liquid to a gas at 212 degrees Fahrenheit at sea level.

So your claim that the liquid glass melts at 1900 degrees is

wrong

because it does not "melt" and 1900 degrees is about 1688 degrees overkill. Anyways, it kills the engine in two ways. It clogs the oil passages as it gets thicker (from the water evaporating) and it tears the bearings, seals, and piston walls apart from being abrasive.

Ironically, this type of solution is used to SAVE cars as well. It resists heat very well when cured and stays hard once cured so many people use it to fix an exhaust leak for instance.

The fuel system, intake manifold, drivetrain, ect are still salvagable. But expect the price of used engines to SKYROCKET.

But about c4c... GOOD. More rbv's in the junkyard to snag parts off of. Maybe they'll start lowering the prices for body panels... $300 per door my ass...

I've found it's best when looking for an engine to swap, just buy the entire donor vehicle and part it out/scrap it when you've taken every part you've needed off of it and you know you're not missing anything.
