So I was cruising craigslist, and there is a guy about 15 mins away from me selling an '84 Mercury Lynx, and its a diesel. I can't find a whole lot about these cars, and was wondering if anyone on here has much experience with them? How about with the 1st gen Escorts in general, anything to watch out for.

The price is right, and the fuel mileage is right, I think it could be a nice comuter car.

IMO Diesel's are WORTHLESS/LMAO.. They are loud / smelly / gutless / obnoxious. I always have to laugh my ass off when i c some short little guy driving some huge dually ( which BTW are also useless ) diesel and you know damn well that truck has NEVER seen the work it was meant for other then providing some king of weird ( look at me in my huge smelly loud truck ego stroking thing ) rofl :icon_rofl:

Ok im done:icon_thumby:

damn, dont you have a sunny disposition on diesel. my vw is a diesel, has 90 hp and can get up and go faster than most 4 cylinder cars can. and even more so, it typically gets 15-20 mpg better than mst cars on the road. as for the trucks, you are right that most never see the work they are meant to. most are status symbols or compensation for the small package they live with.

So i guess the real question is what you are prejudice tword, small gas sipping diesel cars, or obnoxious a$$holes that romp their truck around all the time...im confused:icon_confused:

Depending on the vehicle and how its running, I would go for it.

:icon_rofl: sounds like the little ranger got his a$* dusted by a diesel fatback...

Diesels are not worthless, loud, smelly, gutless (non turbo), or obnoxious. In fact diesels are the real economic, environmentally friendly, alternative vehicle, not a POS prius. Even though people rather use #2 because it is readily available, hydrogen and veggie oil are ran off a diesel engine. Sounds like you were jealous of the truck you saw and were waiting to rant about it.

I mean hell, in your case the ranger leaves you stroking yourself in the corner?:thefinger:

They probely wouldnt do much better then a 1.9L mileage wise, parts would be harder to find, and (cant believe im saying this) but a 1.9L would kill one performance wise.

later,
Dustin

Nice ASSumptions on your part:thefinger: I mean really, you could SPECULATE all day long about why I don't like diesels , but here is a hint, I just don't like them!!:icon_cheers:

Here is another hint!!! KEEP IT SIMPLE ,STUPID!!:icon_twisted:

Performance wise think of a geo metro 3 banger.... But I love diesels. I would go for it in a heartbeat, and when that diesel gave up it's ghost I would find a small 3 or 4 banger diesel like a perkins to go in instead...

well first thing i would do is put on a new timing belt these little motors dont wear bad but if timing belt jumps you will most likely need a new head i am not sure u can get them any more second thing go through coooling system flush radator new thermostat make sure fan works right. thay dont run hot long and last if the glow plugs work it will start really well even in winter and u will get high 40s in millage go for it worth there weight in gold well almost

Buy it. Its a good engine, but the only problem is parts availability. PCV valves and water pumps are about the only thing you can get anywhere on this side of the pond. Most other parts can be gotten but have to be ordered from France or Germany.

Uncalled for, I like diesels. I am not short, nor am I little, nor will I be using a 1984 escort as an extension of my penis. Diesels are in no way worthless, if they were, they wouldn't be used to transport most of the things you use daily from one end of the country to the other. That is fact and if you wish to keep throwing your opinion at me, I will continue to think that you are not contributing anything to the question I asked.

I have a lot of use for a diesel truck, and I have a lot of use for a dually truck. You try moving 3 1400# round bales around with a SRW truck, or pulling a loaded stock trailer at 70mph on a windy day with a SRW truck, and then some back and tell me duallies are worthless.

I appreciate all you have contributed to my question, and I crown you king of the board. This is for you, because it is the closest thing we have to a crown --> ;brownbag;

Moving on, thanks everyone for the response, I will go look at it on Saturday if they haven't sold it yet. I went to O'Reilly Auto Parts today, and it turns out I can get most anything I thought might go bad through them. (Water pump, starter, alt, timing belts, etc...) I will keep you posted. If anyone has any more productive comments, I would really like to hear them.

This is a perfect example of a irresponsible driver, remind me NEVER to be any were near you in your ( I think my truck can do anything ) because it's a dually and is a big bad diesel while driving 70 fricking miles an hour in a wind storm. That is how people get hurt and if my family was involved in an accident with your truck pulling huge amounts of weight while fighting the wind all while going the speed limit JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN,there would be major problems.:icon_thumby:

I could not agree more!!:icon_cheers:

I mean after all here you have this guy attacking me by calling me names like ( tool ) and ( douche bag ) and he's talking about his penis implying I said something about his penis or his man hood wtf??

Lets look at the facts, shall we??

My very first post was in direct compliance with the rules in accordance to me giving my opinion about a diesel that HE asked for opinions about!!!!! NOW he might not of liked my opinion BUT I did contribute to the thread DIRECTLY,yet here you have this guy FLAMING in his own thread.

I never called anybody NAMES or refereed to his penis size:icon_rofl:

I mean everybody got pissy because THEY happen to like diesels and did not like my OPINION on why I think disels are worthless:icon_thumby:

Now I know you were probably referring to me when you mentioned the word ( BAN ) but you see I did nothing wrong except voice my opinion, take a unbiased look over the whole thread again and tell me WHY I should be banned, YOU CAN'T!!!!!

I can give you SEVERAL instances were HE should be banned for various things but I suspect logic and common sense will be over ridden by every bodies love for diesels.:icon_rofl:
