I have a 98 Ranger 2.5 5 speed that i just replaced timing belt, plugs, wires, tps, and thermostat.. also repaired the vacuum lines that were busted, replaced fuel filter, cleaned the KandN, cleaned and sandblasted the intake while it was off.cleaned the trottle body to releave the junk buildup.. and also cleaned the egr valve and iac.. All are functioning to the best of my knowledge.. the timing was right when i checked it twice after doing the belt.. Truck runs excelent when you drive down the road.. however, when it is idling in the driveway and you try to rev it up it wants to miss and or hesitate and carry on.. Sometimes it will pop into the intake tube, like a backfire.. No Codes, only thing weird on the scan tool is the fact that with the key on and no throttle pressure it shows 17%... i unplugged the TPs with it running one day and it acted the same as this issue only worse.. so i bought a new TPS and that didnt do anything.. HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!:icon_confused::icon_confused:

You don't mention the MAF sensor, using the K&N air filter has probably gunked it up, just like your throttle body. Try cleaning the MAF sensor (you may have to replace it from using the K&N), throw the K&N in the trash can, replacing it with an OEM paper filter, and you should be fine. And, for your information, the 4 cylinder uses the same size filter as the 3.0L, and 4.0L, which pull way more air than your 4 cylinder. Therefore, all you got from the
K&N is more dirt and oil, NOT more air.

if he over oiled it yes.

its been proven time and time again, even by the worlds top engine builders, the k&n filter DOES NOT PUT MORE DIRT AND OIL into the intake runners. it filters more debris than a stock paper filter. and the only thing that would casue it to put more oil into the maf and sensors is if he cleaned it, and over oiled it, and didnt let it dry out BEFORE putting it back on his engine.

this issue has been discussed way to many times. its time to actually find the real problem rather than blame it on an air filter.

and im not denying that the stock filter is more than enough for a 4 banger, but performance filters, filter more particles, which allow the engine to breathe better.

and just to add, i guess such filters like spectre, k&n, fram air hog, and such all cause problems because there not "stock paper filters" ehh.

I'm not sure if you can understand this or not, but give it a shot. In addition to high Si in UOA, there are some interesting results in testing OEM paper filters vs K&Ns:

Fair enough! I never said you couldn't buy all the K&N filters you want!

However, don't post bad information that a K&N doesn't pass more dirt than a
paper filter.....check out these photos of the filter media:

Help

Ok guys take it easy.. It is all up to personal opinion.. I usually clean the filter and then oil it only lightly.. anyhow.. i cleaned the MAF.. on another forum i read about doing a mod to take the slack out of the throttle pedal with zip ties.. i did this and removed about a half inch of slack from the pedal.. on a hunch i took these off and it doesnt seem to do it as badly now.. It revs just fine when you do it smoothly... however when you let it idle and mash the pedal down to rev it up quickly is stumbles and jumps
{ said that earlier } and when i blew through it backwards i blew basically mud out on my garage floor.. i was wondering if this could have weakened the fuel pump over time... first filter it has ever had in 118k miles.. dont have a fuel pressure tester right now but i have noticed that it takes a little bit of cranking to get the truck running after it sits all night.. any of this is related.. ALSO last thing.. I was wondering how much movement the hydraulic engine mounts on these trucks should allow.. this thing will really jump around sometimes.. seems like alot of movement, but i dont have anything to compare it to... Thanks for your help...

Also just wanna add that there are no codes present to date..

whatever dude, i just gave the guy some help for MY PERSONAL EXPERIANCE. its up to him to figure the problem out.

im done here. i dont even own a 4 banger anymore so my info is useless.

have a good night and a better tomorrow bob.

I also wanted to ask a dumb a$$ question... every time someone asks about a truck missing on here someone suggests a MAF.. Do the MAF's on these trucks not throw a code for any kind of flow irregularities when they " go bad or get dirty " .. instead of just making the truck behave badly? :icon_confused:

Come on guys need some help.. I didnt initiate a bitch fest about KandN air filters here Ive got a truck that is running like shit and need some help.. Come on... A Little help here.... :dunno:

I have a K&N and recently cleaned it myself (bout 6+ months ago) and I am getting the exact same thing. After a cold start, depressing the pedal a tad will result in a somewhat hesitant jump in rpms. After reading this I would agree it is probably the filter and overoiled (i probably did).

What does it take to clean the throttle body?

If you listen to the sticker on the throttle body then you should probably use a special throttle body cleaner.. remove the throttle body. and using a soft bristle brush and the throttle body cleaner (oreilly auto parts has it) you can clean it.. I work for Cummins and i just cleaned it in our solvent/ultrasonic cleaner.. worked great..
