2x4 to 4x4 conversion

The frames are different because the 2wd used spring IFS and the 4x4 used Torsen IFS.

Unless you like to do a lot of modding and welding. Its best to just buy a 4x4 than to convert a 4x2 into one. Now if its the 2wd Edge model, than its possible.

I was thinking of doing the same thing with a 1997. I wanted to do a straight-axle front with leaf-springs. This is more of a long-term project, though, like for really big tires. You know, hydraulic steering ram, 12" lift springs, etc. All this after the engine swap!

Since this seems appropriate, I'm trying to plan a suspension for 44" Boggers (or thereabouts). Would a D44 and D60 work on this? I don't know much about 4WD axles, just trying to get some ideas going. I'm pretty inspired by CBluePit's Ranger. Think I'll build one once I get out of school and get a job (before a woman takes all my money!).

Memory is fuzzy but I don't think there was an Edge model in '99.
Edge = possible
XL, XLT = not possible
Either way, it isn't worth the effort and expense. Trade it on a 4x4. Easier and cheaper.

A Dana 44 will not hold up for long with 44's if you're actually going to wheel it.
Cruising the mall with the Boggers soaked in Armor All, it should be okay.

Find yourself an older F-250 or F-350 and take those axles. I know the Super Duty's have soild axles in the front for the 4x4.

Yep the Super Duty trucks have a Dana 50 1999-2001 SRW. In 2002 all Super Duty trucks came with the Dana 60. They all, with the exception of the dually, use the Sterling 10.25 rear end.

That's "Torsion" as in torsion bar.

"Torsen" is a specific kind of worm gear differential.
