Hey i've been caught up in the troubleshooting nightmare and the condition of the vehicle doesn't warrant spending any more money on it.Will be looking at an 88 thats in near mint condition (i'm told) but it too has a running problem so I need to know how much of the emissions, fuel and electrical systems are interchangable. Thanks

emissions will be the hang up....87' and < down have EGR valves...88 & > up have no EGR and that requires a different engine computer (ECM) for the 88' and up....that also may have slightly different wiring harness...outside of that virtually everything else should transfer on to the other.

All things are overcome-able, one can have a 87< engine in a 88' and newer truck...just have to have the EGR port blocked off....or use the 88's exhaust manifold on the 87' engine.

also one can go the other way as well, newer engine in the older truck...just have to use exhaust manifold from the 87' on the 88' engine, & or, just use the 88's engine and ECM in the 87'

In short it can be done...either way...newer to older ...or older to newer
