Howdy,

Recently i have rebuilt a old 2.8L Bronco 2. My problem is tho that when i turn the switch over the engine just wanting to turn and not crank, the first thing that came to my mind when it did this was the ignition module how ever its not.
I have spark going to my distributor from the ignition coil, so i am about convinced that for some reason my motor as auto-magically came out of time. does any one have any idea of what the problem could be? Also recently i've been trying to burn out some really old gas(wish id just droped the tank). could that have anything to do with my problem?

Thanks,

Jarrett

when you say it turns over but doesnt crank, you mean the starter is turning the motor over but its not starting? i had the same problem a few years back and it ended up being the cap and wires, we put them together wrong and all out of order. i assume you have checked your plugs to see if you have wet gas on them, and you have checked your spark at the end of the plug wire via spark checker, so i would have to say its a timing issue? hopefully this is the part where someone with more 2.8l experience chimes in........

Remove the cap from the distributor and check that the rotor has not come unscrewed. While you have the cap off turn the motor to check that the rotor is in fact turning. If that checks out ok, put it back together and spray some starter fluid down the carb and try to start it again. if it's a fuel problem it will run for a few seconds. post what happens.

Did you take the dizzy out?If so did you get it back in right?

Well yesterday i got it to crank, it got just a hair out of time. But i found out that my 1 and 3 cylinders are dead, i hope that my valves just need adjusting(this would explain the awful smoke ive been having to). today im gonna run a compression test. Ill keep this updated.

Recheck that your spark plug wires are in the correct firing order, and that the distributor is correctly indexed to the #1 cylinder. As for the smoke, have you replaced the valve stem seals? These are a common source of a 2.8 smoking, especially on starting.

Yea i checked the plugs last night and did a compression test(also flipped my saturn) the compression came up bad on the 1 and 3 cylinders, im gonna try to adjust the valves see if thats the problem. if it aint then i got a feeling im gonna have to pull the engine and put new rings on.
