Clutch life???

I was just wondering if there's anyway to tell without pullin the tranny approx how much life is left on the clutch? I've had my ranger a while now and I was just curious

Not really an inspection plate to see in there. You can tell 1; when it slips 2; when the clutch pedal starts releasing near the top of the travel usually.

Thats pretty much it. Average life on a clutch is about 120k~150k miles. Not counting those who drive constantly on the freeway. I replaced mine around 115K miles and it was about due. Clutch pad was worn flat with just a hair widths of groove left.

Mine begins to release about 3/4s of the way to the top, but it goes into gear fine, no grinding and doesn't slip, even going up hills

I don't know if this is true of all clutches but I have experience the need for increased force on the the clutch pedal to push it in (hard pedal) near the end of its life.

Hard pedal is the indicative symptom

engaging at the top only indicated that the hydraulic parts are
working correctly.

The absolute indication is slipping, usually starting in fth gear and
progressing to lower gears as the clutch continues to wear.

Interesting, I never realized hard pedal was a symptom of clutch wear. The exploder has been an absolute monster ever since I bought it. At leastdouble the pedal effort of the Ranger. Of course, it's been that way for something like 60k miles now. I'd always assumed it was a function of the larger clutch on the 4.0. More to it than that?

My brother's '98 Ranger needs probably half the amount of pedal effort as my '94. Both are 4.0L trucks.

I haven't heard of pedal effort going up when the clutch wears, myself. The 1st sign I've always seen is just the slipping like AllanD mentions.

what does this slipping feel like? how does the truck handle?

the truck with handle the same, the slipping would be like you were trying to go up a hill, and the rpms are climbing yet the vehicle is kind of sitting still. on top of that, if it was slipping pretty good you could get a nasty smell from the clutch.
