what "lifetime pads" do is generally last a long time.
they are usually a VERY hard compound
this "hard" brake compound generally works well once you
"warm the brakes" a bit, but if you do a LOT of freeway
driving the fact that it takes a hard pedal application to
get them to work when cold can be annoying.
I'm personally running factory Ford Pads on my 1997 brake setup
and they work as described above.... they need to be "warmed up"
but since my last set worked well for two years...
The factory pads are either Bosch or Bendix (those are the two subcontractors)
and I'm currently running the Bosch Pads.
It is my feeling that even though both pads are made to a manufacturers
(Ford's) spec there are subtle differences, I've run the Bendix in the past
and think they are just a bit harder and require a fraction more warm-up.
Expensive pads, like Performance Friction, Hawk or EBC typically offer
better hot performance while also improving cold performance
But this is variable depending on your choice of compound.
Frankly If I had the money I'd get EBC pads, either the Red or the Yellow.
