I have a union job with a company that's actually very financially secure. To the snooty, my 35K+ per year might seem like chump change, but I believe you don't have to be rich to live rich. It's all about being wise with the money you do make.
At the same time, I'm in my 13th year at the same job (I started when I was 18) and it's taking quite a toll on my body. I've had various work related injuries before, and now a back injury that I may have to deal with for the rest of my life. I'm 31, everyone says I look 20, but there's too many days where I feel like I'm 70. When I was in the hospital for my back surgery, I vowed to start taking the necessary steps to get out of the business I'm in. I also came to the conclusion that the reason I've been complacent is because I make good money, only work 40 hours a week (giving me lots of free time) and have Blue Cross insurance that I only have to pay $4 a week for, and get 4 weeks paid vacation each year. It'll be hard to walk away from that, but I will eventually, when the time is right and when I have something else secured. I've been very blessed, especially in this Michigan economy, but right now it's all about saving every penny I can, like we all should be doing.
