recliner broken in your Ranger?

I've seen a few threads about the recliner for the seat back not working becasue of a broken stud/shoulder bolt in the recliner mechanism. I went to the Ford stealership, parts man told me that the bolt was obsolete. NAPA parts counter monkey told me I would have to buy a brand new seat, imagine that.
I went to a auto upholstry shop for ideas. He suggested that I go to the Honda motorcycle shop next door , "they have nuts and bolts for everything". I decided to try that since no one else was able to come up with a solution
Low and behold, the parts man came up with a bolt that was a direct fit. Only differece was the head was a 10mm instead of a torx head. Went home, removed the old threads, and installed the new Honda pieces. fixed


parts# number on the bag is as follows

90111-ZB5-000 , in small letters underneath this # M9C18

Thought I would pass this along to those in need

Frankly I'd grab a replacement bolt from a junkyard seat...

Just get one from a passenger side seat because they tend not to get hammered
like drivers side bolts.

I forgot to mention that I did try a junk yard in my area. The counter monkies that work at the local junkyard act as if they are doing you a huge favor just being there. I've been there 5 times over the last 10yrs looking for what I thought were simple parts. I was successful with 1 purchase.You can't by a bumper only, you have to by the whole front clip. I know most junk yards are not like that and are willing to do business with you. I went to another jy looking for a used SHO auto trans. They didn't have any. mechanic friend of mine went later the same day, same jy. They had five transmissions for my year SHO. To make a long story short any of the junk yards in the Lumberton, NC area are not worth dealing with. I would'nt pee on them if the place was on fire.

At the junkyards I go to there are usually two counter people.

One to take your $2 admission as you go in

And another one to total up what you owe on the way out
from a published list of prices..

Holding up a couple of bolts will get you a "Pfffft... have a nice day!"

It snapped just before it enters the handle, is this a part I can replace easily or a "buy a new seat" thing?

AllanD, as hospitable as the south is,these jy around here area bunch stuck up old farts.
Consider yourself lucky yo be able to go into one and purchase used parts

Colin, the part that I talking about is actually on the seat back itself. The seat recliner has 2 small shock absorber looking peices, one for each side of the seat. These shocks help the seat back move lean forward when you use the seat recliner handle located on the side of the seat. The pin that attaches the shock to the seat is what is broken. The seat back and seat are still attached, but
there is nothing to support the seat back in a stationary postion once these studs are broken. I was able to use a Honda motorcycle stud to repair, after Ford and NAPA said it couldn't be fixed and needed a new seat, Ford said the part was obsolete

According to the part number, that is a bolt for holding the bodywork down on a TRX400 quad

And it's like $1.97

Cheap fix for your seat.

And the junkyards around here want you to buy the whole seat (or whatever assembly it is you are robbing parts from) because if you raid an entire assembly for a 25 cent part, then they basically can't sell it then because stuff is missing.

So around here at least, they sell whole assemblies at the junkyard.

Don't like it? Don't buy it is basically the rule.

Just wanted to add that sometimes it's the mechanism itself that's the issue.
My new-to-me Bronco II seat-back gives when you put any pressure against it.
I was hoping it would be a broken bolt, but none were found.

When you press down on the lever, it disengages teeth that determine the position of the seat-back. The teeth are visible from one of the holes I've identified in the pic.
Found mine to have have significant wear, which prevents the mechanism from supporting the seat-back.

I thought about disassembling the mechanism, try to restore the teeth.
Decided against it...found a replacement pair online for cheap (will end up with a spare passenger side).

Those are a pretty common thing to break. IIRC there was even a recall on that piece on Explorers in the 90's.

At least it's an easy fix on 1/2/3 gen trucks. The seats on 98 and newer are way more complicated, if the mechanism breaks off you've got several hours of disassembly & reassembly to fix it.
