decent home theater speakers

I just got a new tv and wanted to make the sound a little better. I think all I will need is two decent speakers to put on each side of the tv. My question is how do I know if I am going to need a reciever? Dont know too much about this stuff. I was looking at the small sony bookshelf speakers that are on the best buy website. That or maybe something a little larger like the size of stereo speakers. The room is not very large so I wont need booming sound, just something to make it crisper.

Depends on the TV. One of the best buy dorks should be able to answer that for you. I assume you are not looking for a surround sound set up, right? There are 2 channel amps you can get cheap.
