I have a 96 ford ranger 2wd 2.3L. I keep hearing a knocking/pinging when im taking off. Its knocks only around 2k-3k rpm, im convinced is probably sparknock/detonation. But ive tried mostly everything in the net, just cant get rid of it. Things ive done are... Common Tune Up, Spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, cleaned maf sensor, seafoamed intake, the egr is good, cleaned throttle body, maybe if I give a fuel treatment will work. Ive hear Lucas Fuel Treatment works. Has anybody had similar problem or any success?:icon_confused:

I have resorted to using mid-range fuel to keep mine from pinging. I use mid-range premium every other tank and that seems to have stopped it or kept it to a minimum.........

Oh yeah.. forgot to mention I was using Premium Fuel(93 octane), it seemed to calm it down but still knocked under load. Maybe that is what started this detonation, i guess the truck got use to the 93 octane. I had the same problem with my grand marquis, but after some treatment the car stopped pinging. My only option is to give it some fuel treatment for a couple or a few months to see how she acts. I guess I answered my own question, Lol.:icon_thumby:

get a timing light and check the timing

also, how old is the timing belt. if shes original, plan on replacing it.

Im pretty sure its original. Will a worn out timing belt cause this pinging knocking issue?
yes, it will stretch out and can jump a tooth. its just cheap insurance to replace it
The PCM sets the timing.......

true, im not familiar with the newer rangers, but if they have a cam positioning sensor on the side of the head. you could adjust the timing through this. but again im not familiar with this engine.

Thanx guys, I need to replace my front main seal anyways, Ill have them replace the timing belt aswell.:icon_thumby:

keewl deeellll

have them do a fuel injection cleaning, the commercial cleaner eats carbon up really good

Wrong on two counts, if the timing belt jumps a tooth, it won't have any power at all, or hardly run, and the timing is determined by the crankshaft position sensor (which is not adjustable) not the camshaft position sensor.

ok 1, i work on cars all the time and have seen a t-belt jump a tooth, run fine just ping badly, so it can happen.

2- like i said, i havent worked on a newer ranger engine so i wasnt sure. im used to working on my buddies 4g63 and your adjust the timing via the cps. sorry for the miss info on that. but its not a bad idea to do the t-belt anyway. it may or maynot be his problem but its good insurance to do it.

i allready replaced my timing belt, and now like 5 months later it does ping:annoyed:
something i've noticed is that it only does it loud when in hot days..

That is what i noticed too, only when its hot it pings really bad, the truck temp gauge usually stays between cold and normal and doesnt ping, when the guage is at normal it starts to pings badly.:bawling:
