HELP Misaligned shifter

My automatic shift panel is misaligned. Drive is 2 and neutral is reverse. Its been like that since i owned the truck. how do i fix this?

The shift indicator on most vehicles is spring loaded and the needle actually moved by a piece of monofilament fishing line (yes, really!) that is attached to the steering column.

The attachment point is held down with a screw and the piece is slotted for adjustment.

I've frankly never messed with one newer than a 1994 other than to REMOVE
the parts while installing a manual trans so I really didn't pay close attention...

Like he said. It is just some fishing line. I have noticed on 95 and newer fords that the line goes through a adjuster that you just have to turn. It has threads on it and you turn it in or out and it adjusts the tension on the line. Just take you steering column cover off and you should see it.

Thanks for your help just one more question. how do i take the steering column off?

...behind the speedo panel there is a small cable that is operated by the shifter that pulls on a small plastic bellcrank that moves the indicator if this is broke (like mine), the position indicator does not read right,,,,somebody rough on the shifter,,,hope this helps
