I looked at an `02 Ranger 4x4 today and noticed it had an aluminum rear drive shaft. I've just started looking at rangers and haven't noticed that before. Is that standard?

Ford started using those to stop a driveline thump issue. If you were one of the lucky ones they replaced your steel shaft with a 4" aluminum. The issue came back though, after a few thousand miles.
