The truck is a 93-97 ranger, its a 4.0 with the a4ld. This is what she sent me:

well, because it was due for a change, anyway, I replaced the fuel filter last week after I ran out of gas and after the ranger started acting up: stalling out at stop lights and even at highway speeds (usually at 15 minutes of run time), just running really rough, in general. on saturday, on rte 9 in cromwell, it wouldn't start up again for at least half hour after it stalled. i made it to my dad's buddy's house in middletown before it seemingly crapped out for good. I'm thinking the spark plugs might need to be replaced (but they are fairly new as it is...), the fuel pump might be bad, or I don't know what. the mass air sensor seems to be fine, so I'm focusing on fuel delivery problems. but not sure what it is yet... got any other ideas about what it might be? hopefully I'll have it up and running again soon!!! definitely miss it already! haha.

I looked in the Haynes and was thinking fuel pump or vacuum lines.

Turn the key and have someone at the rear by the tank and you can hear whether the fuel pump engages or not.

surely something that bad would throw a code? Did you try to check them?

Check the fuel pump relay in the black box under the hood.

Those year rangers had problems with the wires corroding really bad. Local mechanic told me about that when I had very similar problems. Ended up re-wiring the EEC relay (fuel pump was okay) and replacing both relays before the problem finally went away.

im not sure of the 93-97 ranger ecu are as sensitive to pick up codes as the newer ones are.

My 92 maxima could be running on 3 cylinders(v6) with no code at all.

If you type the year/make/model in on the schucks/o-reily's website they have a link on the bottom that shows common problems with the vehicle and can give you an idea if its something common thats wrong with the truck.
