This is what i have. i have the intake manifold back on my truck now, and i have the valve covers off. i'm sure i could figure this out myself with some time, but i think it would be easier if someone could share their technical knowledge with me. i think the distributor is in the right position now, but i'm not sure.

The engine is at TDC, but i'm not sure of exhaust and intake TDC. i installed the distributor aligned with the mark from the cap facing the mark i made on the distributor housing. i rotate the engine and try to see if the intake valves are opening in an order according to 142536, but i'm not sure on this though. It seems like six opens on the one position when it comes back around. What am i missing?

I just pull #1 plug, put my finger in the hole, turn engine until air pushes it out. From there you can line up the T/C mark on the balancer to the timing pointer and it will be close. FWIW, You want TDC on the compression stroke.

The way I calculated it, 6 exhaust should be starting to open as 1 hits TDC compression. If my calculation is correct by your timing order 1 and 5 should be mirrored 1 compress 5 exhaust, and vice versa, as would 2 & 6, 4 & 3
