Deer Whistle things, do they work?

I almost t-boned a deer tonight. I had the right of way, but it just pulled out in front of me. Do those $7 parts work? If so can they be mounted behind the grille out of sight?

idk never tried them, usually if it happens an it gets killed i take it home. if you hit a deer its considered an act of nature by insurance companies and not your fault. but any way i think they are supposed to scare the deer, and typically when the deer gets scared it runs into your truck. but just my two cents

I personally don't believe they work. My mom has hit 3 deer with those whistles on her car.

They don't. According to my friend Chris who works for NYSDEC in charge of Alleghany County here in NY there is no difference in number of deer strikes based on vehicles having whistles versus those that do not.

+1 The only thing they work at is parting a fool and his money. You see lots of big rigs with them. Just because they are sold in a truck stop. Useless pieces of crap.

They're made to take a deer out of "headlight syndrome." Making it move out of the road. You swerving is what hit's the deer. You should calculate it's next move. I don't know how many times I have seen people swerve to avoid a deer and hit it as it crosses into the next lane, when swerving into the opposite direction or continuing slowly would have been the better choice. Another thing stupid people do is slow down when they see a deer, and then speed up when it crosses the road. Always keep going slow, there's usually a second deer right behind that one. Watched a newer Focus get totaled by two deer because of this. First deer ran across and I slowed down to about 20, while they slowed down to 40 and then speeded right back up again after it got by. Two large bucks were right behind that little doe and both of them got nailed by the car.

I never hit a deer when I had mine on, never even came close. Now that I have them off, deer stand in front of me all the time.

I dont know if these things work or not I use to live in the country and have been hit by 2 deer. First one I turned on to a road going about 30 and the deer was between the road and a fence got spooked and ran rite at me. I was all but stoped when it ran into the car fell over got up and ran away. The second deer ran right down the highway at me at night, I was doing 70 and slammed on the brakes hit it about 40 and it broke the headlight and turn signal and dented the fender I pulled over and looked back it ran around in circles for a little and took off. Stupid deer, I still claim they both hit me..

I hid a pair on my buddies hunting truck and he still shot more deer than me (probably got clogged up with mud)! I told him about it, he called me an a-hole grinned and said leave 'em on there for good luck! (True Story)

I don't know if they work on deer, but they do work to alert me when the jerk driving an old chevy blazer is comin through... I hear them a good couple hundred yards off. (kid drives way to fast for the road most of the time an I've watched him pass people an nearly run them off the road cuz he ran out of room on the short straightaway we got)

I put some Silverstar headlights on my Ranger. That worked good for the deer problem, I could spot them before they got out on the road. Of course, that didn't stop a deer from running into my passenger door one night... Saw the thing run across this field, up to the road and BLAM-THUNK-CLATTER... then right back across the field. I got stopped and was turning the air blue (this was during the first year I owned the truck and I bought it brand new), I figured my door was caved in and my paint was scratched and... WTF! Even a close exam with a flashlight and I couldn't find a mark in the paint or a ding anywhere. But the salt spray on the side of the truck was wiped clean in the perfect outline of a running deer.... wish I woulda got a pic of it. My one buddy got to see it like that though.


Do you know what kills more people a year? Is it actually hitting a deer or from trying to miss a deer?

Believe it or not, it's from trying to miss a deer. Swerving into oncoming traffic, trying to make an abrupt manuver at too high of speed, or going into a ditch or the like. Experts say that you're typically far better off to just brace yourself an smack the deer than to try to miss it, your odds of surviving are far better. (that is, unless you're on a motorcycle with the NOS engauged... my buddy's one friend did that one, they scraped him and the deer off the road).

Personally, I keep a knife in the truck in case I should hit a deer. I figure if it's gonna F up my truck, I want to eat it in payment, lol. (That only goes for things like deer, elk, bear, that sort of thing, lol)

Gotta be fast with that though. A good blow to the gut could ruin the meat pretty quick.

I hit a partridge once and it flew over the cab and into the bed of my truck. I was pretty happy, but when I got out to see if it was any good it was a mess so I tossed it in the bushes. Still made me happy that it found it's way into the bed of my truck with no help from me.

I do too, they are about the dumbest animal out there until you want to shoot one.

When one gets in my way and just watches my truck bear down on it, I start flashing my flash-to-pass or highbeam-lowbeam depending on the truck if nobody is around... must make it as unbearable as I can to watch the lights. Usually they turn and run.

I think they work. State Farm gives them to us once in a while. They say on the packae you have to be going 45mph though. But we live deep in the woods and in 12 years never have hit one. I can feed the deer out of my palm--there's 1,000 acres of woods behind my house without a single road through it and they come through my property to use the creek down the hill in front of us--the creek follows our road for about 5 miles so it's like a shooting gallery. People hit them all the time but we drive 45mph and the whistle seems to work for us. You can't hear it though so maybe you should call State Farm and see where they get theirs at.

That's why I'll only take them nice an fresh. Gut it out as soon as you can an wash the chest cavity out with water an the meat will be just fine.

I kinda feel bad for the one guy I work with now an then... he smacked a deer going through the local park at 6:30am one morning with his 85 F-150. Broke a leg or two an messed it up pretty good. Now you gotta understand, this guy is one of the nicest people you'd ever meet and he's not big on killin stuff (though he has hunted, he also was in 'Nam). He said he felt that he had to put the thing out of it's misery and the only thing he had handy was his claw hammer.... yea... lol. But don't worry, the threw the thing in the back of the truck an finished his drive to work where we hung it up off his ladder racks to gut, skin and quarter it. lol.

a good deer catcher does => where i live you are prefectly allowed to keep deer you hit out of season so long as you report the deer hit to the police.

friends of mine have a huge deer catcher on the front of their f-150 he aims for deer when he sees them.
