Firefighters

yes there are im thinking about useing a few as a referance for ones il be getting

hey, im a volunteer FireFighter on Southern Pines Fire Department in North Carolina we have about 40 member some are full time paid and some are volunteer. we usually average about 1200 calls a year

1200? wish i was that lucky.

yeah about a third of them consist of medical calls but a good amount are actually fire calls.

we have had well over 20 fully involved structure fires this year. the best part about it is all the training you get out of it.

im 20 years old and going to school to become a firefighter.. im going for my degree in fire protection and safety, and ill get my EMT and hopefully a volunteer dept under my belt so i can get taken in full time.. its hard to get on the dept.

I'm not a fire fighter, but I just wanted to chime in and say that I have a lot of respect for you guys. I think it's one of the coolest most selfless things anybody could do, if I didn't have athsma so bad I probably would've tried to be one myself.

Cheers.

Thanks bud myself and i know all of us appreciate that. oh an just so you know while your asthma might keep you off the front line service but thats no reason why you couldn't serve in another area of the fire service: dispatch, arson investigation, inspections, and the list goes on. if you have an interest in any of that Do It.

Im doing the EMT now and after that im doing the fire protection and safety. as for the volunteer, im not able to get on because the fire department closest to me is only career firefighters. all the volunteer ones are way to far away for me to get on with.

Heck you live right around the corner from me. I live on Hwy 87. I'm thinkin about joining my local FD. The fire house is literally 5 minutes from my house and I only want to volunteer as i'm going to community college.

x2 on the appreciation - since 9/11 there has been a great awakening to the dangers and perils a firefighter faces. The civilians have always known we were there, but the accolades were few and far between. Now FD and PD get a bit more respect and acknowledgment.
Being a volly is just one step close to full time, and if there are no paid dept nearby, who will do it if not a VFD - I began in one, was there 6 years before USAF.
To the newbies (FD that is) or should I say Rookies, welcome to the brotherhood, it is an elite membership and family that is tight knit the world round.
