Went to start my truck today and she won't go. Please help!

When I went to try and start my truck today it sounded weird, and I thought I heard a thump or something. There was also an odd burnt smell (went away after the first start)

I tried it again and it seems to start but dies quickly. The truck will rev up past 1k and then die. I can keep starting it, and she will die on low idle, unless I hold the gas in to keep it above 1K rev.

I also hear a strange suction type of sound that I haven't heard in the engine bay before. It looks like I may have lost a vacuum hose. Here is a picture of it. I do not see the hose anywhere, or where the other end might connect to.

Underneath the truck I also found two strange caps. Perhaps these are what fell off?

Any ideas?

I tried that already and it didn't help. Unless both caps needs to be on, but I have no idea where the second goes.

It should go either to the air filter box or just right and below of the oil filler cap there is a place where it goes also.

Okay I noticed that the one cap, when on the vacuum port shown, increases the idling time a bit before it dies.

I then found out that there was another plug on the other side of the ports shown (hard to see) that was unplugged. The rubber elbow is pretty worn out and barely sits on it.

It started to run :) Not good enough to take it out running, business as usual, but enough to know that I need new plug caps.

I also need to hunt down where the second cap goes and see what that does. I'll start looking where you suggest, warrior24.

... is that a spark plug wire, see second pic...

If it is, or whatever, it needs replaced!

Another thing everything is rusty I don't know how common this in other states, but here in Arizona its not.

It's a 15 year old truck with 305,000 km. The previous owner lived in the country so it sat on dirt driveways and rusted a bit. I live in Ontario Canada, and our winters do a bit on vehicles as well, with the salt put on the roads.

It's too dark out to mess with the truck right now, but in the morning I'll see about finding replacement parts.

I've got a 93 4.0 ranger sittin out by my garage, if i remember in the morning i'll go out and take a look at the vacuum tree and see where the plugs and everything are and post up what i find for you around 8pm est time.

That would be awesome 93ranger4x4, I'd appreciate it.

Not a prob, i'll try to snag some pics with my phone of the hoses and such the best i can also.

Throttle cable housing or cruise control cable housing.

Minor stuff.

I find it very odd that 2 vac. caps popped off.....
I am not sure of a good sound reason it would do that other than maybe a backfire? (educated guess).

check ALL vac. connections and make sure that hissing goes away! dont go throwing parts at it expecting to solve your problems!

You think that is rust? Make sure you look at the final pictures I will be taking of my b2, you will know what REAL rust is after wards.
