Dual Gas Tanks: Who done it?

I was lookin through craigslist today and I saw a Ranger for sale with dual gas tanks.

"Hmmm," I thought to myself. "Dual tanks eh? I wouldn't mind that. Not havin to use a tank of gas gettin to where I wheel, havin to re-fill, and then usin a tank of gas wheelin' and gettin back. I could sure go for another tank. Every one loves to pump gas less."

Then it suddenly came to me, like how Doc came up with the flux-capicitor.

I'm going to have an extra tank and parts from the donor rig being torn down this weekend!

What I'm getting at is:

Who's runnin dual gas tanks?
Worth the effort?
How are you runnin the pump and filler lines?

Pics would be shnazzy, words just as shnazzy.

I have a rear auxilary tank in my X-cab..but I'm taking out my front tank.

The problem is, WHERE do you plan on putting this extra tank you're gonna have? A Ranger auxilary tank mounts behind the axle and is not the same as a front tank, and unfortunatly you can't buy the tank or sending unit new.

Heres basically all of the parts you would need to put one in your 4th gen..this is from 281Ranger's build since he put a rear tank in his..

and you would need to put a proper fuel pump on the sending unit since first gens used frame mounted pumps along with the in-tank..this is also 281Ranger's, I did the same thing except with my stock 4.0l pump.

They're hard to find man, but talk to AllanD he can hook you up with some of the parts.

And the donor you speak of...is it that bronco? I don't think that tank is even gonna fit between the frame rails!

A bronco II tank will work if you get the right parts. To make it fit like the aux. Ranger tank you need a body lift because the tank is taller. The gas filler is a little problem due to where it is located but that's not too bad. All you need is the tank and the front tank crossmember from the BII. You can make straps from flat stock. The only problem I see you running into is a way to switch between tanks and splicing the fuel lines.

on a 98+ he'll need both crossmembers. They have a big goofy mechanism for the spare tire that needs removed.

and if i recall, AllanD did not do a dual tank setup, he took out his original tank, and put in a rear tank from a full size pickup. im pretty sure he only has one tank. he may have some parts though. as far as a b2 tank, length and width are the same as a ranger's 2nd tank, its just taller.

Or just order a plastic replacement tank. I don't know what the plastic ones cost but you an get a OEM knock off tank for around $100 if you look around. If you can't find one PM me I have a few local connections just ship it to you when it comes in.

I took the easy way out for long trips. Extra 12 gallons. It saves me a lot of money since gas is like 30 to 50 cents cheaper in austin then in the little towns I have to fill up at on the way.

You recall... incorrectly.

I have had several different fuel system setups.
1)The original single 14.5gal supercab tank.
2)Retrofitted a 1989 17gal plastic tank in the midship location
3)Retrofitted again to a 1990-1997 21gallon supercab tank in the midship location.
4)Temporarily installed a factory 13gallon dual tank ranger Aux tank
(NEVER completed or operated as I could not find a functional tank unit)
5)removed #4

And my CURRENT setup.
6) the 21gallon main tank is still in the truck, but for
the second tank (behind the axle) I'm using a "narrow frame" (dualie)
1991-up F-350 (or F450 20gallon plastic fuel tank on it's factory skid plate
with fabricated crossmembers.

I'm not going to discuss at all the various fuel tanks I've had
mounted in the bed IN ADDITION TO the systems listed above.

My fuel lines are mostly fabricated using Econoline or F-series lines
modified as required (shortened and reinserting fittings)

My fuel system wiring is an essentially stock '87-88 dual tank frame
harness I say "essentially stock", because I had to extend the wiring
to the 1985-88 "six port" selector valve, which I was forced to relocate
12" forward on the frame because of my use of the 1990-97 midship
fuel tank.

And the selector switch is stock in the stock location with the stock (factory installed) wiring in the dash.

My aux tank installation required a 1" body lift (homemade spacers welded to the frame) AND replacing the deck support channel under the bed (spanning the space between the "mid" bed bolts with a piece of heavier flat bar.
(carefully "curved" to cantilever it into firm contact with the underside
of the deck.)

Im not sure if FSB's had different sized tanks, but I had a friend with a 78 and that tank held 33 gallons. It'd be a beast to try and find a spot to fit that.
