i bought a 86 ford ranger 4x4 with the 2.9. the problem is the truck runs great till it gets warm then just dies like the fuel gets shut off. i have no idea where to start just change the fuel pressure relay today was told it could be that but still having the same problems. any ideas?

guessing that it restarts fine after it has cooled off??? yes

IF so, seems like classic...TFI, or ignition module issue. remove and test...replace if fualty. most parts stores will test these things for free...but they need to be off...make sure that they test this several times, a minimum of 3 times.

yes the truck starts when cooled off but it only runs for 5 to 10 mins. then when go to start it again the fuel pump doesn't come on so would that be causeing that to happen

the TFI or ignition module has a fuel pump control element to it as well. these things get heat issues and as soon as they warm up they start shutting off items...in this case appears to be the fuel pump.

now i put the new icm in there and now runs for a whopping 20 mins then dies and wont start.

So I'm understanding this correctly, that's the exact same behavior as before - fires up cold, then runs till it gets warm (~20 mins) and dies. Won't restart till it's cool again?

If so, are you sure you replaced the TFI module?

yes the module is on the side of the distributer. didnt have fuel pressure before i put the new icm on qand now i do it just dies after 20 minutes was like 40 degs outside so how hot could it have got the needle on the dash was just starting to get above the cold line
