What are the differences between a 1979 F-100 and a 1979 F-150?

Was poking around on the interenet and a T-case site said that the NP203's were in F-100s and NP 205's in F-150's. I never knew that they had both of the model trucks in the same year; I thought the F-150 replaced the F-100.

Memory is fuzzy but as I recall the F-100 by then was the low-budget rig and the F-150 had a higher payload and more options.
You guys are lucky you have a few old people like me here.

I always thought that the F-150 replaced the F-100 but got "corrected". The F-150 started life in Jan of '75' to get around the new EPA regulations on emmissions. Anything below 7000 gross lbs had to meet the newer tougher standards The new F-150 came in at 7050 lb. Not sure at all about options and such.

He is old.

The F100 was not offered in a 4x4 after 1976. In 1976 the F100 was a 5,300# GVWR and the F150 was a 6,050 GVWR. The F250 was 6,300# GVWR--just for modern comparison. A 1976 F250 is a Christmas Tree ornament compared to a modern F250.

Anyway, the F100 had a D44 rear in the later trucks. I had a '77 with that axle. The F100 also had a single-speed t-case.

So the guys site I was poking around was incorrect then. He said they (the F-100) could be found with NP203 transfer cases up to 1979 (why I was asking about a 1979 F-100).

To get the gear reduction box I would need to find a pre-'77 truck then. Would the pre-'77 Broncos be a 203 or 205 (just limiting when I search)?

Idk much about the 70's F-series but I do know that the single speed transfer was a Dana 21. Its a variant of the model 20.

What makes an F-series a high boy?

hmm the high boys i think are factory lifted but i may be wrong. i have a coworker with a F-350 high boy its a 94

Some (don't know about all) pre 77 Broncos had Dana 20's

I think highboys were just lifted, as smokeater suggested; but they may have had more options than that though, I'm not positive.

The hi-boy was the older F-250, up to '77 1/2. They looked lifted but they weren't. Halfway through the '77 model year they came out with an F-250 lowrider 4x4 that replaced the hi-boy.
1970's and early '80's F-350 4x4's exist but were exceedingly rare even when new.

That's kinda funny, cuz I hada friend with a '78 or '79 f100 ranger with 4x4. Also the dude above you said that transfer case website mentioned two transfer cases for the 79 model year. Ford did some stupid stuff back then, but I dont think they offeref the transfer case without 4x4. They might have cut back production after '76, but didnt offer 4x4 ina truck? NOt Ford.
