ok so im in the tech library reading about what axles come with what vehicles. It says that some Aerostar's came with a Spicer/Dana 30 axles with aluminum housing. How hard are these to find? and what are the benefits over a regular 8.8. also what are the specs for the dana 30?

Where did you read D30s came in Aerostars? I'm pretty sure they had some D28 IFS clusterfawk. The D30 is typically used in jeeps, it is a FRONT axle. The 8.8 is a REAR axle.
And did you have to make 2 different threads?

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Axles.html Go to where it tells the axle code for Aerostars and at the bottom of the chart there is a note about Aerostars. It says that some aerostars with the number one in front of the axle code came with spicer/dana 30 axles and aluminum housing.

It's news to me as well, but it seems to be true. It came in some 86-89 Aerostars as a rear axle.

They seem to be pretty rare though, so I'm sure getting your hands on one would considerably more difficult than an 8.8. If anything I'd think the 8.8 would be stronger as well, definitely the 31 spline version out of an Explorer.

Wow, that is odd. That 30 has zero benefits over an 8.8 other than being lighter. D30 7.2" ring gear/27 spline axles versus 8.8 8.8" ring gear/28-31 spline axles, hmm...

yea thats what i figured, i went out today and got an explorer 8.8 out of a 94 with l/s for a hundred bucks today. :headbang:

That has got to be a type "O". None of my books show any areostar with the dana 30. I don't know though could have been a brainfart/fluke from the factory.

You're wrong on BOTH accounts. As mentioned, the D30 was used in the rear of some Aerostars from around 87-89.

And the 8.8 is used on the front of IFS F-150 4x4s. It is also a front axle.

A D30 in the rear of a old Areostar ?? Talk about a sucky diff in a sucky vehicle !!! LMAO !!
