I have a Honda Odyessy that has a wicked shimmy in my steering wheel. I've been living with it for some time and after my last road 11hr road trip, the shimmy has to go.I've had my normal mechanic static balance and do alignment work. Each time yup Mr Sapochetti its fixed. As soon as I get the tires warmed upped the shimmy comes back. It has come to the point were I told him to take the car home and drive the car to see what the shimmy is like and I don't want it back until its fixed. Its driving me effn nuts. The shimmy comes and goes and it starts around 55 to 70mph.I did do some research and most of the time they are saying do a "road force balance"
What is it and why isn't a static balance enough?

road force balancing is a method of measuring a tires runout under loaded conditions. it'll usually uncover a seperated tire that can get by a visual and/or dynamic (you want dynamic, not static) balance.

it sounds like you have a bad tire, a road force test wouldnt be a bad idea.

My store installs tires for a honda used car dealer........all the hondas they send us (other then odyessy's) get cheap no name brand tires. But ALL the odyessy's get top of the line GoodYear's or Michelins. These vans are so freaking sensitive to tires its unreal. We were installing good coopers and mastercraft tires on them but they kept coming back with vibrations like you describe. Once we started installing the top of the line tires the comebacks went away. On these vans even a .002-.004 out of round tire is easily felt while driving.

Goodyear tire spec on out of round tires qaulifying for adjustment must be of .004 or more of up/down movement in the tread to even be considered.

A road force balance is a balancer that applies pressure to the tire while it is spun while balancing to simulate the tire being on the road under a car. Check the tires for seperation and bulges. or there might be something in the tire like water ect ect. Ask you shop to zero them out not just slap the wieghts on.

A static balance is where they only place a weight on the inside of the rim so it doesn't show on the outside, dynamic is placing weights to balance both sides not just one big one to compensate for both.

Roger that.I got the same Michielins that came with the car.(700 bux:shok:)Thank God this car didn't come with the run flats.Great idea but total shit.I know my mechanic pretty well and I know he doesn't have that type of balancer. He's grumbled that he will have it(the car) sent out to a the dealership to have it checked out. We'll see....

i would take it somewhere were they can road force it and do a dynamic balance, i wouldnt be surprised if that fixes it
