Fuel Pumps

I was given a FP out of an early-mid 80's F150, it has the same pigtail as the one in my 4.0, does it have the same specs? The one in my truck now is about toast, so I need a new one, and wanted to know if this will work.

did you call ford about part # matches or compatablity? you could also look up the psi ratings of both trucks efi and the gph of both pumps.

part #'s are different. the local dealer has no idea if they are compatable. Where can i find the PSI or GPH ratings, I tried googling it, to no avail.

also if the pump is a higher a higher output than the stock pmp, would that pose a problem?

a good repair manual(or alldata) will have the psi each system is supposed to operate at.mustangers and other hi po apps play lots of games with different gph's i don't know what affect that would have on your stock regulator,etc.if the f-150 is a v-8 it should have similar flow to a mustang pump right?from the volume of info out there i bet you could call a tech line or two,or surf the web for gph ratings.

As long as it is not a low pressure pump, it'll work. Nearly all of Ford's "high" pressure pumps from the mid-80's to the mid-90's were in the 90-100lph range.

'80s vintage F-series trucks used a frame mounted pump like rangers (up to the end of 1988.)

Ford didn't actually switch to HP in-tank fuel pumps on the F-series trucks until 1990.

If you can get the "sock" off the bottom of the fuel pump and look inside
The Low pressure pumps only have a plastic impeller.

The High pressure pumps use a gear-rotor style pump mechanism.

Another "tell" is that the HP pumps have a Brass port at the top of the pump
low pressure pumps have a plastic pipe.
