how big of a rim can i run

how big of a rim can i run and keep my 33's? I have a 4 inch lift and am running 15's with 33's i would like to run a 17 or 18 if possible to get a better selection of rims. Im looking for black rims any suggestions?

if you want to run your CURRENT 33's, you have to have a 15" rim, obviously.

if you want a tire that is 33" tall that fits a larger rim, you could run a 305/45/22, thats a 22" rim...or a 305/35/24, that'll impress the guys on mtv cribs. those tires are both about 33" in diameter. heck, you could even run a 305/30/26 (yes, they make them)..thats only a little over 33" and gives you 26" rims.

in case you cant tell...the limiting factor here is not the tires, its the wheels. the real question should have been "whats the largest rim made with the rangers 5x4.5" bolt pattern?", or "what size tire do i need to still have a 33" diameter for a 17" or 18" wheel?".

while i cant answer the former, the latter is easy:

17" wheel: a 305/65/17 is 32.6" tall and 12" wide.
18" wheel: a 305/60/18 is 32.4" tall and 12" wide.

I run 35's with 17's. i think the wheel combo looks good little less sidewall but it makes it blend more with the truck. go to 4wheelparts.com go to tires and put in the size you want by the width and it will tell you what tire companys make what size. and for what size rim.

and the 5x4.5 is a very well used lug pattern, from mustangs to jeeps to, fullsize ford cars. rims are made in almost every size for this lug pattern.

tho i would save youself some cash and use your current rim/tire combo for spares or winter tires depending on how BLING you go with your new rims.

all the tires i mentioned are 33" in diameter. you dont have to stay with the SAE tire measurements in order to keep a 33" tire. in fact, you get a lot more choices in metric tire sizes than SAE.

the 5x4.5 bolt pattern is so-so for aftermarket wheels. there isnt a big demand for 26" rims on mustangs, jeeps, or rangers...so finding them would be tough (though perhaps possible). though 17 and 18" rims are plentiful...he asked how BIG he could go. the simple answer is, "how big of a rim can you find with a 5x4.5 lug pattern?".

Is this truck going to see off-road?

I always use the rule of thumb not to excede half the tire size with the rim size. Offers a good off-road (aired down) performance. You want more ruber than rim. Don't want to bounce a rim of a rock, etc.

Ex: 15" max for 30-31"
16" max for 32-33"
17" max for 34-35"
so on and so on.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH if you think mustangs are the only car with a 5x4.5 bolt pattern that are in high demand you have alot to learn myfriend.. as i know right now if he wanted to bolt a 22inch rim to his truck he could. if he wanted to bolt on a 26 inch rim he could there are MANY MANY cars that have the 5x4.5 lug pattern and im sorry that you think that only mustangs are the ones going to get large rims. I know for a fact that they have 24inch rims out there for jeep cherokee's there is a retard driving around with some in my town.

where in my post did i say that mustangs are the only vehicles that use the 5 on 4.5 lug pattern that are in demand? hmm, looking back...i didnt. ive worked at 3 different tire shops over the coarse of 5 years...im well aware that other vehicles use the 5 on 4.5 lug pattern.

but compare the number of available 22"+ rims using that bolt pattern to, say, the number of 22"+ rims using the 6x139 bolt pattern (thats the GM pattern used on the escalade)....hmmm, quite a few more options in that bolt pattern.

i never said he couldnt get 22" or 24" rims for his truck...i said his options are going to be limited in those sizes and will get more limited the higher you go. so my original statement stands, the answer to, "how big of a rim can i run" is, "how big of a rim can you find with a 5x4.5 lug pattern?".

And GM 6lug is also toyota 6 lug and some of older dodge's.

and as far as you working at tire shops yippy skippy you can mount a rim and tire so can half the monkeys in the NYC zoo. who cares who you work for or anything like that. he asked how big he can go he can go as big as he wants, his selection might be small but really after a certain size they all look the same bling bling bling.

I'm not trying to offend anyone but have you considered what effects such a large wheel/ tire combo will have on the vehicle's ability to be used as transportation?

I have seen issues like poor braking, wearing out steering/front end and brake parts real fast, as well as much poorer ride quality if you go to too big of rim.

If you understand this and are cool with the compromise then more power to you. It's better to see all consequences before you decide than be like the guys I see who are selling a $2000 set of rims for $600 after 2 months of hating the way their vehicle drives.

call up HRE im sure they could build you one! it might cost you 5 grand per wheel but they could probably do it lol!

to answer your question, yes you can run 17s or 18s just fine with 33''s but for reasons of practicality i wouldnt reccomend going any bigger, all terrains will be harder to find and if you offroad big wheels/lo pro tires dont mix well with offroading. if you dont offroad or dont want all terrains there is no reason you cant run a 26''(or bigger, good luck finding them though but theyre out there)

all i really wanted to know was if i could run an 18" i was told it would be too big. I don't want to trim anything on my truck. i do like the 33 but would also like the 35" tire. Before i do anything i need to get my ball joints fixed cause it wares the inside of the tire really bad on the front any how. Still saving my money and getting ideas though thanks.

We sell tires in 33x12.50-20 all the time. Toyo M/Ts. The options are damn near endless.
