Hey I have an 85 ranger or a 87 broncoII. Ok Here's the story.
In my weldin class we have a big class project ever year. My ideal won.(thank god my welding teacher loves wheelein). We are goin to attermp to make a good wheeler.
Witch would you do. Okey I want to know why and why not you would chose the bII or ranger..
1985 swb sc ranger.
I would have more hauling room with the bed. Is carbed would be easy to hook a beefy 302 ho engine in it.All ready striped down so we could it down to the fun part buliding the thing. It would be swamped with a 302 high outeneing with an alum intank gt40 heads holly 650 carbed 5spd have a 6 lift or possible a sas. running at lest a 35" tire.
1987 bronco.
same drive tran as the ranger. But with lot of bod mods in cludeing choped top. tube doors and alot of outher stuff.

Iv been thinkin more towards the ranger. I could haul my race karts with it also. It would have a flate bed made out of angle iron and car walk. I am tryin to talk him in to a full roll cage but he is sayin metale is to high. We have some angle and catwalk all reayd.I will have to buy some tubeing tho for the bumpers and custom longarm type sas like a jeep. I am buyin a dana 30 off of my weldin teacher and pullin an 8.8 out of something. I am goin to wait on the bronco I am goin to take a set of 1 tons i all ready own and make a full out willer with a 351 that is a race engine.

Do both! haha. Have a battle between classes.

Okay, this is probably way to expensive i realize. But hey, maybe do one in class and use the info you learn to do the other later!

BroncoII all the way. Don't chop it Just build it. Build a Cage internal or Exo. Cutting metal isn't part of welding classes unless your cutting brackets to weld to it.

Just stick a 302 in the Ranger and leave it alone, 35's will not help it be a great truck haul around a four wheeler in. Being a shortbed 4x4 it is not an extremely common truck anyway.

BII's are balanced better for wheeling, but are more likely to tip over (both sideways and front to rear) than a Ranger. I don't know if the turning radius would be a huge advantage over a SWB Ranger.

I prefer the BII for an offroader, simple because of the wheelbase. The Ranger would take the BII on hillclimbs, but the BII would do better just about anywhere else.

BTW, metal prices I hear are plummeting, I would rethink that excuse lol (I don't think there are many excuses for not having the cage anyway).
