Anyone with 3D scanner experience?

Things have hit the point at work where I'm in need of a 3D scanner for a medium sized project.

Anyone here have a background with them? I've been educating myself as much as possible about the technology, but most of it is murky as to what you actually get out of the box. The only thing I've been able to determine so far is that they come in two flavors, under $2k or over $20k. Really trying to avoid that second category, and trying to keep it under a 2k budget.

Learn me on em. What should I look for? Brand recommendations? Things to avoid? Methods, tips, and tricks?

We have a few super nice ones at work, but IDK how to use them lol. I know they cost more than my house, so I try to avoid them with my track record for breaking stuff.

What are you trying to scan? If its something that can be removed I could possibly get my guys at work to do it and send you the data.

Yeah... trying to avoid the super nice ones lol. Saw ones in the $40-60k range... cheaper to hire a draftsman at those rates.

Stuff we're working on is proprietary and not yet patented, so trying to keep it in house for now

We have a CreaForm Metrascan with all the bells and whistles and laser scanner attachment for our FARO arms.

I know nothing about them and precious little about 3D printers. I do have a 3D printer now that needs a new print head and I’m supposed to be getting a better printer at some point. I haven’t had a chance to sit down and mess with any of it yet.

But if you get a scanner, we may have to have some discussions.

I know some phones do well enough to clean up in solidworks and print copies of parts with just a couple size measurements. Early 3d scanning was done with an Xbox Kinect sensor.
