V10 swap or 460?

Supposdly the 3V V10s run hard...ive never driven one.
I read somewhere a while ago that one problem with the V10's was that dealers ordered them with 3.73 gears thinking they'd get better mpg when the truth was that they need to spin a bit for best efficiency and did better with 4.10's.

They are stupidly thirsty anyways. What ive read is they get as bad as a 460.

I had a Dodge V10 once....thing would of pushed over the eiffel tower but i dont think it ever got out of single digits.

If you are cussing the 5.4 over a blown plug now just wait until you go thru all the work to V10 swap it and then blow a plug. :icon_rofl:
V10s blow plugs yes…. Not near as much as the 5.4l. And it would be new enough to have an 8 thread head.

Gm 8.1 mated to an allison.

As close to a diesel torque curve as a guy can get with a gas job..
Will never happen. Chevy sucks more ass than Nissan. Their crap is no longer ever allowed in my driveway…. Even if God himself installed the 8100/alison himself I would rip it out. Plus that Allison transmission… not a fan. My work truck at my last job had chronic C1 clutch failures and chronic random solenoid failures. And it wasn’t just mine, it was all 5 GMC 2500s. Now, I have nothing against an 8100… I’ve seen them take abuse and neglect that would kill a 300 i6…. Still don’t want it.

The 4.6 somehow kinda flew under the radar, Ford was rather stingy with the 5.4 at first. There just are not as many out there.
Mine is a 98, has factory PI 5.4l.

As much as it pains me to say it the 460 is going to be a big ass headache,

The V10 should about drop in besides room.

Even in 98 the electronics would be a nightmare going to an EEC IV 460.
My 97 f350 wasn’t OBD2? Nevermind. Only the California model was OBD2 and eec 5 in 97…. I bought mine in California.

newer 6.2L might be a better all around option. Performance is probably better then the V10.

Probably easier to find too since the V10 is getting a bit long in the tooth.

The 6R110, i think it is, seems pretty reliable.
Too new, electronics too advanced. Transmission costs more than the truck is worth… costly programming. Engine is not that easily to get a hold of and every time I find one a bidding war starts… and if I was going to go that rough I would a delivery miles 7.3l from LMR with a 10r140 and run a divorced transfercase.

Is he referring to the 5.4's that had four thread spark plug holes? In 2003 they changed them to eight thread heads. That's what my 2004 Ford SVT F-150 LIGHTNING has. As for changing them, some years back I got some new heater hoses that are far shorter and don't look like spaghetti under the hood. And long COP screws that stick up from the engine three inches. And with the proper spark plug/extension/swivel that can be bought now, that number 4 is not difficult at all.
It is when you need knee replacement surgery and shoulder replacement surgery, limited use of my right anrm, are 5’6” and have short arms. It is literally easier and faster for me to pull the engine to change the plugs. I’m not saying it can’t be done but I have physical limitations that I have to work around. Plus I’m not doing a timesert in the engine bay. If I’m doing 1 then I’m doing all 8 with the heads on the bench where I can put the drill in a jig.

My last 460 in a 97 F350 got 12- mpg gallon. My only V10 got 12 mpg. But with long tubes and a tune I got it to 14. But it’s irrelevant…. I have a 2009 Avalon to drive back and forth to work and a 2006 V8 4Runner. Any engine I pick will get a best of 8-10 towing my 8000 pound camper, which is the whole reason I bought this truck… because the 4Runner gets bullied by the camper. I really wish GLA was done with the frame swap on my 4Runner already.
