Refilling a torque converter....

Its not on an RBV...its on my 99 Crown Vic. 4R70W trans.

Its has a drain plug on the converter...but how do you go about refilling it?

Im getting some slight shudder once in a while...hoping fluid/filter takes care of it. Fluid is old looking but dont smell burnt and trans seems fine otherwise

I usually roll the vehicle over after the converter has been drained. Then fill it through the drain plug hole.

Remove drain plug, pour in fluid, replace drain plug?

I don't know. I pulled the plug and drained the one that came out of my Explorer. I just assumed I would get a funnel and fill it as full as I can before I put everything back together.

Have you searched for YouTube videos?

Now I'm going to be lazy and let you figure it out first.

I didnt youtube no.

I googled it..and get conflicting info.

Some say fill the pan, start it, and keep adding...but others say dry firing the converter will eat it up.

I did a bunch of those back in the day. I always just let it idle until I had close to what I thought had come out combined ( pan and converter). Then start working it through the gear ranges.

Says it holds 14qt total.

So top off the pan, fire it up in park, let it run for a minute or two...add more?

Fire it up... and start pouring. Don't wait... pour.

Been awhile... I don't remember it being that much fluid.

Thats what im seeing online. 5 in the pan...maybe 14 total. So 9 in converter

Maybe ill see what a shop charges,i really dont wanna replace the converter

It has been a while since I looked it up. But it's more than you expect. Don't forget you're filling external lines to the cooler(s) also.
