Any new firearm purchases?

I did a 2 hour long machinist rain dance around my 60s vintage Atlas (Craftsman) before I bought it. It had barely any time on it and just needed cleaning.

Beware, tooling IS valuable when compiled together in one place. Bare machines are NOT. I don't mean just piles of cutters and a steady rest. If it has a slotting attachment, work light, milling attachment, knurling tools, various different centers, dogs, 3, 4, and even 5 or 6 jaw buck chucks WITH both jaw sets for each, etc. . . Lots of variety, thats what makes a machine/tooling lot valuable. Besides condition anyway.

I bought a South Bend 9A last year and have been pretty frustrated with the lack of tooling I have for it. Every piece is like $2-300. Buying one with a bunch of stuff is definitely a must. People like to split them up though! I watch auctions quite a bit and it seems like every time machine shop stuff comes up for sale, it's split up into different lots, and often it's obviosly done intentionally so that you have to bid on multiple lots to get a complete thing. Lathe by itself and the tool holder in a separate lot, and the steady rest & tailstock in a 3rd lot... ahh don't even get me started.

What model Atlas/Craftsman lathe do you have? I picked up this little fella a while back, sold it right away because I was afraid of breaking it on bigger stuff but it would have been OK for really light duty use. I didn't have any of the change gears or anything with it either which was kind of a turn off. There is another one for sale on FB MP right now for $100, includes all the stuff, kind of tempting.

Mine is a 101.28970. Its a 12x36 freestanding unit with the motor in the cabinet. Funny enough, it had so much tooling with it, I didn't realize it at the time but I'm fully tooled for an Atlas 7b Shaper machine as well that I dont even have (yet). Paid $1200 for it down from 3500 asking. There's only a handfull of stuff I dont have that I want. Metric change gears and gear box plaque, slotting attachment, quick change collet closure system, buck chuck and the turret attachments for the saddle and tail stock. Those are the big ticket items anyway.

By all the stuff, that should be bare minimum, centers, change gears(complete set, do your research), steady rest, dogs/drive plate, 3 and 4 jaw chucks, tool holder, and the miscellaneous tools for the machine. BARE MINIMUM. If it has all that, not bad for $100. If you found something like what I have with a smorgasbord of cutters, mics, calipers, bits, and stuff you don't even recognize, those are the ones worth chasing for higher dollar amounts assuming the machine displays even or little wear. Mine even had, in addition to several odd books, the original owners sales catalogue with marked items (all of which were included down to the starter pack of cutters).

Wow, very nice! I paid $1200 for my South Bend, it has some wear in the ways and a few other minor issues but I felt like that was pretty fair considering where I'm at and our lack of heavy industry here. Machinery gets snapped up right away at high prices that probably would linger or go for a lot less if I was out east somewhere.

The annoying thing I wish I had was a 3 jaw chuck. I'll pick one up eventually. Sometimes I want to bang out a quick part without a bunch of fiddling... or take something out, test fit it and put it back in... measuring runout on a 4 jaw gets old for that kind of stuff but it's totally worthwhile if you need a really precise part.

Have acquired 2 recent new pieces. Pic is of the rounds for both.

The Seig lathes get a bad rap, as a lot of people say they're a "preassembled kit". The best versions of them are available from littlemachineshop.com but they're also the most expensive... I've had one I found on craigslist back in like '07 that was originally bought on one of those Homier tool trucks... just the little 7x12, HFT only offers a 7x10 in that now, LMS offers a 7x16 version... Of course the 8x and 9x versions are better, anymore I don't remember which has more features but we have the 9x at work from LMS and it's a pretty nice unit for what it is, sure it's not as precise as a better one but that's not what it's used for there. At some point any lathe is better than none and compromises can be made to get anything as precise as you need... I've made a whole bunch of random stuff on my lathe over the years from prop hubs to turn weedeater engines into RC airplane engines to prototype fuel cones for propane/natural gas carburetors at work... and a few things for giggles to catch cleaning patches so to speak...

That said I also have a little Craftsman 109 I think at my moms I'll grab one of these days, it was missing a bunch but I got it for like $20 or something dumb...

Tonight I organized the drawer of stuff I got on Walmart clearance over the last few months... a bunch of pellet gun pellets, 4 slings, a scope, a holster and a shotgun cleaning kit... I really wish you could still buy those 100ct boxes of shotgun shells for $20... I don't have enough of a reserve of 20ga shells...

Ok now, some of us were called out for going off on history lessons in an unrelated thread. So I've got to call a foul here.

This is a firearm thread, there is a thread on the forum for new tool purchases. I like seeing new tools too when I go to that thread, but in here I'm looking for firearms. Too much non firearms stuff in the firearms thread.

Just saying...

You dont get firearms without lathes. This coming from a guy you go to when boom stick no boom no more. You wont venture into lathes as a topic for long before you run across firearms. Seeing as how the corollary is also true, you might learn something useful if you pay attention.

the only firearm you need. the tools and knowledge to produce one.

no serial number no registration.

i hate buying firearms.

There are things you can't talk about that can be fabricated with the right knowledge and tools as those above me hint at... sometimes wording is strategic and details are left out...
