I scored this new truck, as some of you have seen already. 83 F-100 2wd 3.8 v6 auto shortbed 38xxx miles 1 owner, nearly rust free, very solid!!! been trying to get for 2 years. interior is beautiful! still debating on what to do with it I am thinking crown vic k member with a carbed 351. it runs and did a very short drive for now. its gutless, running rough too. started cleaning already. also considering 300 I6 w/ turbo? i dont want big power anyway i go, just fun

Definitely needs some love, but sweet ride.

supercharged 3.8 from a Tbird would bolt right up. 320 torque at low rpms.

what gears in the rear?

Wow, that's in nice shape. Pretty uncommon to see an F100 of that year, especially with all the options that one has. All of the bull nose F100's I have seen - ever - have been 80 or 81's and almost always with no power options at all. Can't say I have ever seen a 3.8 in one either although I knew they were out there.

That is begging for a drivetrain swap... it's unique enough that an argument could be made to leave it alone... but I say swap it. Even a mild 302 would be fun - but you can find factory motor mounts for just about anything in those trucks. 351w would be cool, I think if it were mine and I had no problem finding parts, a 400 would be awful tempting, as would a big block.

I THINK the 300/302/351 would be able to share the 3.8's transmission... at least for a little while.

400/460 not so much.

I think it's a c5 transmission with 8 1/2 rear axle. 3.8 supercharged would be cool, but computer stuff that I don't want right now. The ranger has a 347 w/ sniper efi, and I want something different, but bolt existing trans for now. That is why I chose carbd 300I6 or 351. I THINK they will bolt up as well. Stock 4 now with both, upgrade later. Ordered tires, new weatherstripping for doors, windows, and rear glass, new plastic fuel tank and sending unit as well. May have already found a running 04 crown vic for $400, no title but I don't care. For the immediate future it is more cleaning, install new rubbers, and most likely a wipeon clear, the patina is growing on me. I think 2.73 rear gear. Found build sheet in glove box, it was bought from a dealership about 45 minutes up the road!

Think you're right, might be an AOD or a C5? I don't remember what the shift indicator should have in those trucks that came with an AOD. I figured a transmission swap would go along with whatever engine swap happens.

Those early 80's trucks are always weird. My '80 F100 had no power options at all, a 300 six, SROD transmission and a 9" rear with really tall gears, and it was a stepside truck. The '82 F250 that I got from my kid has a 351w but apparently you could also get a 351M in '82. It was used for hauling a camper but I swear the rear springs may have came out of a Suzuki Samurai... I can stand on the rear bumper and it'll give the truck a reverse rake.

For some reason I feel like the AOD was later.

C5 is a possibility for sure.

I think they were both options in those years. I scrapped an '82 F150 a couple years ago that had a 302 and an AOD. I guess it could have been swapped in but it sure looked original. I just don't remember what the gauge cluster had for gear indicators.

Dad's 80 was a 4spd so I can't help ya lol.

Internet says c5 according to door code, doesn't look like the c6 under my 82 fullsize bronco. Trans swap happens when it becomes a necessity or I score a good one with new motor i reckon. My brain or atleast a portion of wants me to keep it carbd. Im having trouble talking myself out of sticking carb. Most parts n tires should be here before weekend so I can get it home, it's sitting @ my parents house. I really need to fix my 03 f250 before I dive to far into this. 6.0 with high pressure oil leak..... I think... I'm no mechanic, and a plumber under the hood of an oil-burner?

C5 can be built as a C4 to take whatever SBF you want to throw at it.

I had one of unknown build in my Ranger at first when I did my V8 swap. Possibly the best shifting transmission I have ever been around, if not for the lack of OD I would still have it in my truck.

Oiling the vinyl...
