Working on the Ranger. Getting it ready for sale, unfortunately... Replaced the severely leaking fuel fill neck. And the tailgate straps. I either under filled it every time or I wasted money from spillage. Luckily here in the PNW there isn't salted winters. I wouldnt couldn't consider the surface rust on this truck to be bad at all for the age. The bed bolts didn't take much persuasion to come loose. With having a factory bed liner really did wonders for the bed. Looks really good besides the rub spots.

Was replacing the straps for the tailgate when the nut for the bolt fell inside. Any suggestions for replacing those nuts or whatever is generally used?

The one on the other side of the latch. Is it still there? I thought those nuts were spot welded inside?

Maybe you can take #4 completely out and then see what is going on.

No I was checking the top and it fell out too. Head both of them hit the bottom of the gate.

Iwas working with mine and the nut fell inside. Only have one side holdomg tail gate up. I plan on cutting out a section to get the nut out and re weld it like it should be. I am Rhino lining it and that willhide the cut.

Magnet through the handle hole and go fishing? I was going to suggest taking the service panel off the inside of the tailgate until I realized we were talking about a 91 and those didn’t appear until 93… I always hated how all the service work on the early tailgates is done through the hole around the handle…

If the diagram that @franklin2 posted in post #3 of this thread is accurate, that would mean number four is the tailgate latch.

If I'm reading the diagram correctly anyways.

I would remove that latch.
Then I would tilt the tailgate on end.
I would then shake the tailgate back and forth, right and left.
You may have to shake it up and down as well.

I'm thinking that most likely the nuts will fall out.
