So after finding pieces of the cassettes in the oil pan on my 4.0 sohc, I’m pulling the engine and doing it all.
Couple questions before I start on the parts.
I already bought a set of hydraulic tensioners from Cloyes anticipating trying them first to see if it calmed down my rattle. That was before I found pieces in the oil pan. Are the rest of the components from cloyes ok to use compared to Ford oem stuff? Is it worth doing all the chains and sprockets too will I’m at it? I’m at 160k.
I can imagine what all the parts strait from a ford would cost compared to the cheap kits I see on parts geek or amazon but I want to do it right and not cheap out. Has anyone seen the timing chain kits sold on ebay that are supposed to be ford oem? Even the packaging in the pictures say ford on them with ford part numbers. The kits are around 200 bucks.
how about the tools to time the engine with the new components. I’ve seen a used set of otc tools on ebay for around 200. Again it’s something I wouldn’t want to cheap out on but if the 70 dollar nock off kit will work I’d like to hear about it.

one last thing is deleting the balance shaft if mine has one. It’s a 2003 4x4 so I’m assuming it has one. Pros and cons on that?
I’ve been searching and reading as much as I can on here about this whole process. I’m confident in doing the job, I just want to Mach sure I use the right parts so I’m not pulling the engine again in 6 months.
thank you

I've never heard a bad thing about Cloyes. I suspect they are the OEM manufacturer for many vehicles.

I appreciate it. I’ve been trying to search and read as much as I can on here so I don’t have to ask a bunch of stupid questions.
I’ve been working on diesel engines for a long time but this particular motor and its timing system sure has me scratching my head on how it was designed.

It is highly unlikely that you have the balance shaft. My 2002 4.0 SOHC engine did not and I have yet to hear about any 2001 Ranger having one. The consensus I have so far is that no Ranger with the 4.0 SOHC had the balance shaft.

If you do find it in your engine, I would like to know about it. The delete should be simple, just eliminate the drive chain to it. If it has the balance shaft, it might not be a good idea to remove the shaft. I am guessing it has bearing journals that are oil lubricated. Removing the shaft could result in a drop in oil pressure due to the journals not being able to hold back the oil flow. Again, chances are extremely thin that you have the balance shaft.
