TACH CLUSTER UPGRADE ISSUE

I have a 1987 F150 and I swapped out the cluster with a tach. Been keeping my eye out for one from a manual/300. The switch was plug and play and went perfect. After admiring the tach at idle and a few revs the temp gauge pegged out hot and the engine light came on. I ran a jumper from the negative battery post to the sending unit but no change. Any idea to fix this?

Took it all back apart and now it works fine. Took it down the road and convinced this is the best thing I’ve done to the truck. Not sure what fixed it but kickin’ now.
 
Temp wire could have grounded out in the wiring behind cluster, that would cause temp needle to go to HOT, same as grounding the temp sender wire in the engine bay
 
Bumping to the top with an issue. The red engine light stays on the dash. The cluster gauge says I have oil pressure and isn't running cold or hot. Engine isn't knocking like starving for oil. Is there something going on behind the cluster? Anyone ever had this issue an fixed it?

If there is an issue with any if the emissions equipment, the light will come on as well. You will need an OBD I code reader or look up how to jumper the plug inorder to get the flashing light code.

thanks for the reply. I know how to jumper the EEC. I didn’t think anything would happened hear because the orange engine light is not illuminated.. only the red one.

I'm only used to having one CEL. I don't know what triggers that one then.
 
On the older Rangers with a red and an amber check engine lights, I think that the "red check engine" light is triggered by the oil level sensor that's mounted in the side of the engine's oil pan. Maybe the same on your F150?

After searching and reading some both oil pressure and coolant temperature will trigger this light. Neither are an issue as the gauges show everything is fine and the motor hasn’t blown up yet from oil starvation. I also read that there is some kind of module behind the cluster that says go bad? Hoping somebody with experience on this issue can chime in.
