Farm and Garden

did some dirt work today, lot of work, and chains located with tillers on a tractor make quite the racket :). There's a before, after, chain and where the dirt went picture. Where the dirt went was climbable with the tractor before but not mowable with the tractor or riding mower but in theory should be mowable with either now...

What do the chains do? Break up the dirt more?

They hide in the ground and let you know you found something that shouldn't have been there :)

Adding to the shed to add a lean to for the boat and other stuff like the tiller to free up room in the shop and help things live longer... and a short lean to on the end for firewood which should hold almost 2 cord...

Still have to figure out a way to get that tree stump out and I forgot to pull a T post...

The little birds aint so little now. They are finally now going out into the run.

Not so farm related but cleaned up around my fire pit and outdoor gym a little and wanted to be able to enjoy the fires this fall. Added some sand(still need a little more) and a steal of a deal on some turf fescue so I can sit and relax. Looking forward to a fire and a bourbon drink!

I made some progress in the garden. It's almost usable now. I still need about 80 block to complete the retaining wall part of the project. I just ran out of steam while moving the dirt.

Ok, here's some pics of what I've been up to... If you scroll up you see a before pic of the same area (you know, the previously known as after pic... :))

Then there's the fun stuff I found in that pile of dirt (just a small sample, way more rocks to sort out, that was just the top easy rocks)

Then there's the supervision I had while working that day (I refer to them as Steve and Steve 2, Steve 2 is newer and don't see her too often):

Then there's the end of day progress on the pile for the main dirt moving day:

Then the next day after I moved more and flattened it out, and the dirt I moved over to the pond berm:

Then the cute little stump I fought yesterday, no wonder I wasn't having any luck at all pulling the thing over last year even with my F350 with camper on it... turns out it was like 12" diameter and was really trying to be a tree...

Then we finally get to today where we got to by the end of the day with the lean to for the boat, we went a bit overkill and that's 4x6's and they'll have 4x6's sitting on top of them with 2x6 rafters like the one next to it:

Anyway, what is the deal with the dang exhaust valves?

They clean up... clean. Not really servicable to put back in and run or to regrind, they need replaced. So we are going to grind them, put them in to see if it will break loose and then see what we have for the rest of it before we buy a bunch of new valves.

More yummy goodness to be had yet...

So then I go home and mop out the bores, really they look pretty good.

So it hit it with some pb blaster hoping it can get in there and eat a little better than it could back with all the crap in the engine.

Searched and searched and found this. I think I have more updates on here. Somewhere I went thru the head and touched up the valves and put it back on. I put my JD B on it with the hydraulcs and nothing moved. Dad brought over his Case 830 which has a little more umph (but not as much as my A-C's). There was a slight "conk" and then oil started coming out of the headgasket. Switched to the next hole over it did build pressure... and then more oil which eventually came out of the first cylinder's spark plug. So we popped the headgasket in two holes.

We in theory have two more cylinders to try... the middle two are all the way up and #2 and #5 are about in the middle. We stopped there for the night to think it over.

I really don't want to rebuild this thing, there is no way I can right now.

Oliver broke loose... with a bang.

It turned a lot but halfway there was a bang. Something broke, probably a piston.

So I guess at least it it will be easier to get apart. I am going to rip the head back off and see what I can see from the top end. The cast iron frame is like a tub, I can't get the pan off with the engine in the tractor.

That design is nice though when you want to pull the whole engine , Cant imagine trying to r/r something like a allis c where the block is the frame. was quite a pain back in the day to split the ford 4000 for a clutch replacement.

C ain't bad.

Jack up the front, block it under the bellhousing. Remove the tinwork and radiator. The front end unbolts off the engine and engine unbolts off the torque tube. Easy peasy.

The Oliver I will have to pretty much blow it apart. Radiator has to come out, fuel tank has to come out. Clutch housing will probably have to come out with the engine.

As Yoda used to say:

Always two, there are. sometimes more, no less. A runner and a parts machine

It just ain't natural to only have one...

Anyway I think I can harvest some of the belts off this one to get mine to work. This one is newer than my first one and is probably a better machine... I think it has the unfortunate combination of having more bales thru it and sitting longer. Everything on mine is free and ready to go, not much on this one wants to move. I haven't looked up the sn yet but mine is a '52 and has stickers like a tractor of the same period, This one has stickers like a D series so like late 50's/early 60's but not new enough to have a white top.

EDIT: Its been repainted with a sticker from a white top, SN is a 1949 model. Some shady used equipment salesman from way back in the day got me lol.
