Quick question...

Are they all the same? I need one for my 86 2.9. Was wondering if one off a V8 will work? Those are everywhere in junkyards...2.9's not so much.

Specifically off a 460?

2.9 is a metric motor so I doubt a 302, 351 or a 460 would work. One from a 2.8 might work as the 2.8 and 2.9 are both Cologne engines. I would bet someone here might have one, you might want to post a part wanted add.

Once you find a bolt with the right threads, it shouldn't be hard to make a hold-down from a small miscellaneous chunk of steel. It just has to be able to put some clamping pressure on the housing to prevent it from turning.

Ill post up an ad after i look around and make sure i aint got one laying around.

Good point on the metric vs standard...but im not sure that would affect the actual hold down...just the bolt.

Ill keep that in mind if i cant locate one. I was just wondering cause V8 ones are everywhere online and in the boneyards. 2.9's are scarce anymore,

Crossthreading is organic loctite. :icon_thumby:

I would almost bet the actual clamp would work... with a Metric bolt of course.

Try the one from your LTD...

Ain't you got a welder? :icon_welder:

Pour water on and let it rust into position. You ARE rusty ol ranger, after all.

That one might be missing as well currently. Yall dont understand....im like columbo....i work best in a chaotic mess...but the side affect if i can never find shit. The pole barn at the old house is 30x50...and its packed so full you can barely walk in it.

Which is why i was curious....10 bucks for a hold down saves me 5 hrs of searching lol

They are getting scarce, but what about the 4.0L? They may not have had a distributor, but they still a cam position sensor that installed the same way. Those should be more available.

I was thinking the same thing since the 4.0 OHV is essentially a bored and stroked 2.9

I wasnt aware the 4.0l used that type of method to hold down the cam sensor. Ill look into that

Don't know if it is the same style or not. Been close to 20 years since I've looked at a 2.9L and didn't looks close at the distributor then. I do know that the 2.9L uses a distributor, the 4.0L CPS is basically the bottom half of a distributor, and they are both Cologne V6 engines. Did early 4.0L use a distributor? If so, then I feel it's even more likely to be the same or usable.
