maybe an alternative for the anchor is an 'ol school post hole digger.
heavy duty 3-4 foot pole with a loop at the top and 8" split plate at the bottom.
turn it (with difficulty) and it will screw itself down 3 feet.

or go steal a fisherman's ice drill. ( in the desert??? )
