I’m looking at a 1990 Ford Probe but it needs an engine and I don’t know what engine it has/had. I know the first generation Probes had a 3.0L as an option and I have a spare 3.0L collecting dust and I was wondering if the 3.0L Vulcan out of a 99 Ranger would have the same bell housing as a 1990 2.2L Mazda F2/F2T. I do know the car has the G4A-EL transmission but that’s all the specs I have for the car.

Highly doubt it.

I think the 3.0 vulcan only shared a bell with the 3.8L

In 1990 if its a GL then 4cyl only, 2.2l

If LX then would usually have the 3.0l Vulcan as an option

The GT had the turbo 2.2l 4cyl

If you can see the 8th digit of the VIN
C = 4cyl non-turbo
L = 4cyl turbo
U = 3.0l Vulcan

I unfortunately don’t have access to the car, did LX come with the G4A-EL automatic transmission do you know?

Transmission model wouldn't matter, or tell you what engine was there they have bell housings that match the engine
Rangers used the 4R/5R model automatics from 1995 thru 2011
2.3l/2.5l Lima different bell housing
3.0l different bell housing
4.0l different bell housing
2.3l Duratec different bell housing

But all used the same 4R or 5R automatic model designation

Don't ever buy a vehicle unless you can check the VIN, it can have Liens on it, and you owe the money if you buy it
Have owner take a picture of VIN and send it to you
If they won't then walk away

That’s true but it’s also true that some engine and transmission sets are more common than others as well as different variants of the same model were offered with one transmission while the other variants had another. Ergo, if the LX didn’t offer an automatic it would stand to reason that the car I’m looking at isn’t. And yes I know about the vin it wouldn’t be my first time buying a car, it’s the same as buying a gun used you check the serial number.

only the front drive 3.8 blocks, rear drive 3.8 blocks have SBF patterns.

and 1 rare Lincoln 4.6 DOHC transverse FWD. I forget exactly which model/year.

edit: almost forgot the 89-95 Taurus SHO engines that were built by Yamaha shame on me

did you try Probe forums?
maybe Hollander interchange manual

Oh man. I had a really nice '89 Probe LX with the non turbo 4 cylinder and a 5 speed in high school. Had literally every option except leather seats, super nice car. Unfortunately the manual transmission in those are very weak and I destroyed it in real short order. Wish I would have gotten a few more miles out of that car.

FYI you can use Mazda 323 and 626 cars for donor parts
