I'm looking for a new truck for next year I'll be on SS. Leaning towards Ford Maverick or Santa Cruz. Any other suggestions.

How it's engineered apparently has a lot to do with how well it's gonna perform and how long it'll last.

Iirc, there's two different ways cvts are done.. the way ford does it and the way subaru (mabey nissan?) Does it. The way ford does it is allegedly much better than the other..

Nissan is notoriously bad. So much so, they were sued and lost. Warranty was extended to 10 years, 100,000 miles. I tried to convince the girlfriend to unload her car after hers was replaced but she refused.

Are any new Mavericks actually available? Last I heard, annual production had sold out before it even began. Any Ford dealers that actually got a new Maverick were jacking the price, sometimes doubling it. So you might be forced to get the Hyundai anyway.

A former coworker just had the one she ordered in September of 2022 delivered to the dealership.

If I remember correctly, aren’t they only offering those via custom order in only a certain date window? Or am I confusing it with another model or medels?

You're correct. The year's production was selling out in just a few days.

That is old news. The 2023 model year production was sold out in 5 days.

The order bank is open for 2024 and orders are taking 3-4 months to get delivered. There are a very few in stock and the in-stock ones are still typically over sticker, but ordering one and getting it in a reasonable time is the norm now.

I still have mine....it has both a centrifugal clutch and a cvt...

If the vehicle has a CVT, that is a full stop for me. I’ve read very little good about them and their reliability in vehicles.

The CVTs used in most hybrids (including the hybrid Maverick) are very different than the trash CVTs in Nissans. The hybrid CVTs are basically just two electric motors and a planetary gearset and have very strong track records of reliability. The garbage CVTs have cones or bands that stretch and wear out or break over time.

My wife had a Cube with a CVT. It had a steel "belt" and worked much like the CVT on snowmobiles, ATVs, minibikes, etc. except the sheave adjustment was hydraulic. The "belt" was made from many stamped steel V-shaped links that were connected together. Aside from being the opposite of exciting to drive and weird looking, it was a practical vehicle. She had 140k on it when it was totalled after being hit by the rear wheel and the airbags actuated.

A former co-worker had an Altima with ~220k on its CVT. That was about a year and a half ago; as of this summer he was still driving it. We all had multiple bets on when it was going to fail, and kept losing.

On topic, my wife has a Maverick XL. Hers is the 2L non-hybrid. She test drove a Santa Cruz and didn't like it; the salesman was also kind of pushy and that may have soured things for her. She really likes the truck, but in my opinion it has two things going against it. The lack of cruise control in the XL is stupid, and it's really noisy on the highway. Different tires might fix that. We added aftermarket cruise but I think if she could do it over again she would wait and order the XLT or whatever gets the cruise.
