2002 F250 diesel - discovery and build thread.

Good advice, and I had thought of it. I doubt that I’ll get it running that easily anyway. My issue is that this is a lot for my Fun50 to haul on my trailer. My buddy with the 3/4ton Chevy is tied up.
Its probably a 6000-6500lb truck. My 460 powered 3/4ton HD is around 5500IIRC

That sounds about right. The dump bed is a lot heavier than a regular pickup bed.

Well, he communicates. That's a bonus. So, he says he has replaced; glow plugs relay, starter relay, starter, I'm, cps, valve cover gaskets and pigtails. He says "I’ve give up on it man come get it out my way. Will consider trades with cash also or trade for nice four wheeler"
WTF? His troubleshooting is all over the place. So, basically, I still don't know if it will turn over. It doesn't sound like he is much of a mechanic. Of course, I'm no expert.

I think I'm going to try to round up some money and go down there this weekend. It's about 1.5-2 hrs away. I can look it over good, look for rust, look over the steering, look for leaks at the wheels, pinion, transmission output, etc. Short the starter terminals and see if it does anything. Maybe I can talk him down some more in price.

Offhand, I don't recall what the initials idm and cps stand for. (Just looked those up - injector control module and cam position sensor) And I wonder what pigtails he changed with the valve cover gaskets.

@snoranger , what do you think?
It’s hard to say… he’s replaced parts for both cranking and running issues. Is it a cranking or running issue?!?! Maybe he replaced the starter thinking it wasn’t cranking fast enough to start.

That’s the thing. He’s all over the place. It could be out of fuel, for all I know at the moment.

Maybe he burned up the starter cranking it with a fuel issue. If he replaced the cam position sensor, did he get it pointed in the right place?

Or its locked up.

Perish the thought.

But how much would a used 7.3 cost anyhow? If the truck is cheap enough and mechanically sound, it would be worth it. I don’t really want that much trouble, though.

Quick search on car-part.com, around here, 800-1200 seems to be the going rate.

Cheaper then i thought

Do you have AAA? every stop and re tow counts as a new free tow. My mom got to L.A. halfway from vegas like that lol. Just get dropped off a few times.

Don't know how I missed this yesterday... the 7.3L is a fairly simple giant beast... mine died on me a few years ago and wouldn't go for a while, turns out the high pressure oil pump gave out (not much code wise, and at $800 hard to throw that part at it), ended up with a spare for some labor of pulling it... I'd tried changing the cam sensor but my OBD 2 reader was showing rpm so knew it probably wasn't that... so I do have some experience in this area...

Just FYI my 4x4 SRW crew cab long bed '97 F350 PSD is 7300lb. It's no powerhouse but does everything I ask, the injectors are apparently good for around 250k which is around where mine are and it is tired, on the short list is stage one injectors, intercooler, tuner and modified HPOP, goal is 350hp tops which will do ANYTHING I want it to. On the extremely short list is rebuilding the transmission and new clutch...

As far as I know the 7.3 is a bulletproof reliable pig that can be built to hell or even roll coal if you like.
