Aerostar 4X4

oh yeah...the more i ride in that thing the more i want to build one

I'm torn on what to do about the diff hitting the cross member. I can lift it 2" (higher center of gravity)and not be able to get it in the garage or modify the cross member (making it weaker) and move the exhaust up. ???????????? RB

I don't know. I would put air on the holes and see what happens. My guess is that the C4 gasket and body blocks them and they aren't needed.

The bottom body is called the timing plate. It's supposed to improve shifting somehow. I am willing to bet those extra holes will blow right back out at you through another hole if you put air on them. If they do, I would install the C4 body and give it a go.

i just need to get a plasma.....:icon_thumby:

that will fix it:D

If money is no object it's easy or you can spend over a year farting around like I did. (And still not finished)

That was my thought too but it don't hurt to ask. RB

I stopped by the parts store to look at filters and they had nothing. I ordered a 75 Bronco C4 filter. hopefully it will work. It's hard to clean the inside of the VB. I'm tempted to tear one of my C5 VB apart but I'm afraid parts and springs would go flying. I'm soaking the VB over night so hopefully it will be perfectly clean to go in tomorrow. RB

C4 VB is in and it basically don't work. It tries to go backwards but don't. It goes forward but don't shift at all. No guarantee that the VB is good so I basically learned nothing. RB

I had one more VB laying around. It was out of a C5 and it had a tag on it that said SR5. The VB that was in the C5 in the van said HM7 on it's tag. I threw it in tonight and drove it about 1 mile. Shifts are better than the HM7 VB from what I could tell. Tomorrow I'll drive it to town and that should let me know if it's fixed or not. In the mean time I may have found a fresh C4 that i can afford. It was taken out of a 351W powered Mustang. Time will tell whether I need it. RB

I put it threw it's paces tonight and the 2-3 shift problem is gone even under WOT. The only thing that bothers me is how seaming less the shifts are under partial throttle. In my wifes E350 club wagon with a C6 it's easy to keep track of what gear it's in but it's very hard to tell with the C5. Part of the problem is that the rear of the van is so much lighter than the front so wheel spin probably absorbs some of the shift. I'm also wondering if the HM7 VB is bad or if it was just the wrong one. Is one for a Ranger and one for a B2? RB

I think the great advance on the C5 with that added shift timing body was to improve the shifts, which maybe means drag them out and make them feel vague.

Somehow that C4 body should work.

Edit: Totalled has it in his.

It says in the tech library that the VB are interchangeable so maybe mine was just bad, but it basically only had 1st gear and even that wasn't right. Reverse did absolutely nothing unless you revved it way up and then it would try to move but slip something fears. The 2 C5 VB's I have have some differences in the hole sizes in the plate so I'm wondering if that was what was causing the shift problem. It seams to work just fine now. When this tranny bit's the dust I'll build a C4 and use the C5 bell, shaft and intermediate housing, and see if i can't get a lower stall converter, or build an adapter and use a C4 bell and converter, that is if I can find a flywheel that will mount to the 4.0L and bolt up to a C4 converter. That would probably be the ticket if one could make it work. RB

From yesterday till today is the first time I've read over this entire thread and I must say RuelBreaker this is an incredible build, please keep updating us as the bugs get worked out.
