Anyone recommend a High Temp goop to help seal Y-Pipe / Cat juncture?

Howdy all,
Just replace my gasket between Y Pipe and Cat. Y Pipe is old and has some missing edges so a small bit of exhaust leaks out. See pic below. Cat is new.
I had hoped that replacing the old crusty gasket would fix it but it is only 50% less leaking. It helped some.
I can’t replace this Y pipe right now. I already spent some 50 hours redoing the right side manifold due to rusted hardware and I know the y pipe connection on left manifold is working fine but will be a huge can of worms again since the two bolts on bracket are highly rusted shut.
So I’m wondering if slapping on some kind of high temp sealant at the spot where it leaks will last a long time or not. It’s like a two inch long thin breach of the seal, so would be pretty easy to apply it. The leak isn’t horrendous but when putting lightly compressed air into exhaust through tailpipe you can hold your hand up and clearly feel it. It’s creeping around the inside lip of juncture so to speak, so it’s not a direct flow opening I’m trying to close.

Is some JB Weld stuff the best choice or is there some other approach/substance that any of you have used and recommend? My fear of course is making it very difficult to undo this in the future but it would be worth the risk since I definitely have some CO getting in the cab. It could be years before I replace the Y pipe so I could commit to this.
Thanks!

That spot there gets ridiculiously hot. Tried various things on mine and none of them lasted very long.

I’ve always put some red RTV on exhaust joints. I don’t know how much it really helps.

Muffler mender with 2 gaskets

I know jb weld wont work. Ive tried it on a crack across the bottom of my cat on the 94 (and its empty-wouldnt be as hot as a normal one would) and on a cracked 5.4 manifold. It will work on a cracked oil pan though.

2 gaskets and this goo.

JB Weld makes a product that takes much higher temperature than the regular JB Weld. I have never used the high temperature stuff but I use the regular JB Weld a lot. It is a great product and I would use the high temperature stuff if I needed it.

The problem you have is, I don't think that flange is going to hold up. It looks like a crack is already radiating up from the bolt hole. There isn't much flange left to seal the exhaust anyway. I don't think any amount of goop and gaskets will work for this.

Try it. 10 bux ....little time.... Some extra washers.

89,

If you are not a welder, take the damaged section of exhaust to your best welder buddy. Cut off the original flange, use it as a template to make a new flange from new 3/8" or 1/2" steel and weld it up.

Or, cut a new flange, thoroughly clean the old flange and weld the two pieces but-but.

Tubing can also be slipped over the old tubing to reenforce it, beefing up the joints, helping prevent future failure.

I do not see any sealant or goop holding up to the type of dynamic heat stresses this flange is subject to.

That is what I use. My bronco is quiet 🤐

Bobbywalter,

I am not against trying it. I've never seen that product before. If I can't find it locally I may be asking for a friendster shipment 👀🙂

I did something similar to that , had a muffler clamp around manifold & another on downpipe, 1/4” all-thread between the two and tightend it up, did that to both 93 & 94 rangers. on the 93 I first tried s.s. hose clamps, that rigging doesnt last for long.

Yeah....not permanent ..but works to get by till you have time and money to deal with it.
