2007 Fx4 level 2 VIN number

The goal of course is to pay less than his asking price however take a look at these kijiji ads for some perspective.

This one is from a dealer with rust, dents and some faded paint.

this one has rust and some dents from a private sale

here is another that has been modified with speakers, exhaust, lift, and oversized tires. none of this stuff is what i want with the exception of the exhaust. I dont like buying other peoples modded vehicles or there problems.

the one i am currently looking at has 115000 km no rust however that remains to be seen if i can find any, no modification other than a nostril bar with some lights on it. I know the front pads and rotors need to be replaced which likely means the rear shoes should be replaced to and there is a draw on the battery from those front lights being installed incorrectly. However for now i will just disable them, then when its no longer -40 C i will dive into that and properly wire them. both of those issues and a complete fluid change should get it down to a more reasonable price.

I suppose my point is that its worth it to pay a little more for something unmolested with low km and minimal to no rust in particular for the highest trim level of the year available. although i do realize that the 2008 fx4 ive posted is also the top trim for that year. Canada's car prices are extremely undesirable right now but my current car may burst into flames or just throw a rod so i kinda have to bite the bullet.

I will give the Ford dealership a call and ask what system they used when they open back up there RimJam, you make a good point they are becoming hard to find and people will begin scamming others. I will also look into that disc brake modification Rubydist. I will drive it around for a little bit first and see what i think of them before i take the plunge and change them, thanks for letting me know where i can find the parts necessary for the mod! Thanks for all of your replies! it has been a big help.

The only thing I don't like about rear drum brakes is doing a brake job on them. I upgraded the friction material on mine at around 50K miles. I now have 269K miles on them and have not had to do another brake job on the rear since the upgrade.

I tow a lot local and cross country, and spend a lot of time off-road. I never felt the need for rear disc brakes. I have learned to pull the ABS fuse when off-road but I don't think that has any thing to do with the rear drums. I do live in SoCal so that may help the rear drums work better.

I have heard some minor complaints about rear disc brakes when off-road. It seems the rotors and calipers are more exposed and rocks kicked up by the front tires can cause some damage to them. I have no personal experience with this so it could be just hear-say.

That 2005 does not look like an FX4, but I could be wrong.

You are also in Canada, and I think the trim packages were different there. I know Ford discontinued the FX4 after the 2009 model year in the US.

I agree with you Marlin, it is best to not buy somebody else's problems, but as these trucks are getting older, there are fewer examples available that have not been well used.

These are pickup trucks, most of which are driven everyday and used in the manner in which they were produced for. It's not like buying a Corvette or some other kind of sunday driver that usually stays in the garage 6 days per week and never sees salt.

Alright so as an update i have seen the truck the banks need to open in order for me to purchase it first though. things look pretty good on it however there are some problem areas that need to be addressed.

Leaking front axle seals.
rock chipped windshield.
rust on the front box corners, rear cab corners, under the wheel wells however line X or rock guard will take care of that.
brakes need to be replaced and possibly the calipers to resolve the brake and steering shake.
some bushings are beginning to dry rot however they will last a little bit longer.
front seat has some wear.
complete fluid change/flush.

other than that its in great shape the frame isnt rusted at all, underneath the adhesive cardboard/tinfoil? heat shields there is no rust everything else looks to be there and in decent shape. I took a look on the ford performance site for those rear calipers however i cant seem to find the kit you are talking about there rubydist. Would you be able to provide a link? I will keep looking in the meantime as well as search the forums. Thanks for all your help guys!

Honestly 16k for a truck with that stuff wrong seems a bit heavy.

I found a mint 99 4wd 4.0/5sp for 18. Granted not an FX4, but still.

Ol ranger did you mean a mint one for 18000? you also have to remember i am in canada so our markets are a bit different I wished I lived where the vehicles are alot cheaper!

Also, don't forget, Canadian dollar vs american dollar does make a difference.

Marlin,
Were you able to contact the dealer again & find out how they determined a Level II from the VIN?

Hey there RimJam no I have not been able to, I have been working alot and getting my insurance and registration done with the truck. I will update soon though. If you were up for it you could always call the dealership and try and have them run the VIN to find out. Its free and it will likely be faster than my reply. VIN 1FTZR45E37PA74247

I managed to get the price down quite a bit and with the sale of my car its worked out pretty nicely in the wash. Now my main concern is the front axle seals are leaking well more sweating than a leak however they do need to be addressed sooner rather than later. New front brakes will be here soon to correct the brake shake I am experiencing. I am thinking of buying the Brembo front rotors and brakes as they are not to expensive and a decent upgrade from stock. I do not trust rock auto very much these days and with no prior experience with the powerstop brand I am just going to go with a reputable brand. Will update with pictures soon!

Already struck out with my local dealer when I tried to order a brake backing plate for a Level II w/ Torsen. All they could tell me was "not available", they had heard of a Level II option in a Ranger but couldn't tell from the VIN.
